Kickstarter Hot Picks – February 1-15, 2018
Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. 2017 marked the first time that the Games category took the top spot on Kickstarter, with the number of Tabletop Games projects having grown significantly, up 18% from 2016.
Tabletop Games have constantly grown over the past few years, both in terms of the total amount of money raised, and the number of projects funded. After a record year in 2016, the subcategory grew again by +36% in 2017. Most noteworthy, the number of funded projects grew by +20%.
There is no doubt that Kickstarter is a serious driving force in the content being supplied in the board gaming industry.
In the latest roundup of Kickstarter Hot Picks, we navigate a hostage situation in the 1980s, cause mayhem at the Red Dragon Inn, fight zombies in a mall, win by losing, and, finally, have an epic superheroes-vs.-robots battle.
Let’s take a look at these hot Kickstarter campaigns…
Countdown: Action Edition
Countdown: Action Edition, by Dog Might Games, is a hidden role game where players try to navigate a hostage situation happening in a 1980s action movie. One Reckless Action Hero, an Out of Control Hostage Situation—who will you trust?
One player takes on the role of the action hero, while the other players are the hostages or villains. The action hero will need to determine which players are the real hostages and which are the villains impersonating them. This needs to be done quick—because as soon as a player draws the Bomb Card, the game ends.
The $25 Movie Ticket pledge gets one copy of the Countdown: Action Edition game and all stretch goals. A $40 Playmat pledge gets one copy of the game with stretch goals, and one 24”x14” Countdown Playmat. The $45 Fanny Pack pledge gets one copy of the game with stretch goals, and one Fanny Pack holding 14 Release Tokens. A $60 Fully Loaded pledge gets one copy of the game with stretch goals, the playmat, and the fanny pack.

The Red Dragon Inn 7: The Tavern Crew
With pockets full of adventurers’ gold, it’s finally time for the staff to take a break! The crew of the Red Dragon Inn joins the party!
The Red Dragon Inn 7: The Tavern Crew is a new 2-4 player stand-alone expansion to The Red Dragon Inn series of games by SlugFest Games. In this game, you and up to three of your friends will play as the staff of the beloved tavern. Play as hopeful survivors or as the zombies in this 1-5 player game featuring competitive and cooperative modes, and… more ITEMeeples!
Tiny Epic Zombies is a 30 minute, 1-5 player game of survival by Gamelyn Games, where survivors are always on the run, collecting weapons, killing zombies and working toward completing objectives. While completing 3 objectives can win you the game, focusing too much on the objectives can cause the zombies to overrun the mall. Then the game will end.
This game features 5 distinct play modes: Cooperative team-play with game controlled zombies, Cooperative team-play with zombies controlled by a non-team player, Competitive free-for-all with game controlled zombies, Competitive free-for-all with zombies controlled by a player, and Solo.
It also features ITEMeeples where, as you collect unique items in the game, then you equip them right to your Meeples!
A pledge of $20 receives the retail version of the base game and all stretch goals. Add $5 to receive the full Kickstarter version of the game, all stretch goals, and the Kickstarter Limited Exclusive Deluxe Content.

Last Stand – A Board Game Where Your Power Grows As You Lose
Last Stand is a simple board game for 2-4 players where your power grows when you’re losing. The novel mechanic of this game is that as players attack you, you receive more cards for a more powerful to come back.
There are three axes of strategy: how players arrange their cards on the board, how you attack other players with dice, and how and when to use cards.
The goal is to get rid of everyone else’s cards on their boards and to be the last one standing. If you run out of cards on the board, then you’re out of the game and can’t play cards anymore. If you’re the last one with cards on your board, then you win.
A pledge $25 or more will get a copy of the game.
The campaign ends on Sunday, February 11, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 302% funded.
Lightning & Bolt — an asymmetric co-op superhero adventure!
Lightning & Bolt is an asymmetric, co-operative game from the creator of Vast & the illustrator of Everdell. This is a game of superheroes & robots for all ages, mixing together a lighter and heavier game for a great time.
Lightning & Bolt is a tile-matching game, but with superheroes, robots, and extreme asymmetry. One player takes on the role of Lightning, the fast-flying, power-punching superhero. The other takes on the role of Bolt, her towering robotic companion. Because the city of Midtown is being terrorized by the Evil Doctor, it’s up to Lightning & Bolt to swoop in and save the day!
Lightning’s mechanics are fast, simple, light on rules, and high on fun. Bolt’s mechanics are more complex and therefore take more finesse. But once you get Bolt’s engine running and software upgraded, the Evil Doctor had better watch out!
Due to the 100 handcrafted copies of the game selling out, only print-and-play copies remain. For a small pledge of $1 for the black and white version or $5 for the color version you can download your own PDF copy of Lightning & Bolt for print-and-play.
The campaign ends on Sunday, February 11, 2018. The project has reached its goal (it was funded in 80 minutes!) and is currently 122% funded.
