Shazam! Feature Film Starts Production

Cut! Print! Shazam!

The amount of time spent getting cameras to roll on a feature film is staggering. And that doesn’t include the timeline of the shoot or how long post-production lasts. Sure, it’s a bit easier when big studios throw hundreds of millions at them until they’re ready. But often, the result is an effects-driven blockbuster with a long post-production schedule. It’s cutting an inch off the top and adding it to the bottom. So, it’s no small feat that production is officially underway on the New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Shazam! movie.

Public perception of the DCEU is middling at best. Justice League didn’t light the box office on fire, and their biggest fans are some of the most toxic in all of fandom. So, in the months following Justice League, Warner Bros. laid low and let Marvel and Star Wars drive the conversation. Furthermore, they only have one movie slated for 2018 (Aquaman). But, with a new year comes a new opportunity.

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg shared the first look at the set of the film on January 29th. Granted, most of the view is obscured by the slate for the scene they were filming. But, we did learn that the movie is shooting under the working title Franklin. Working titles deter any unwanted visitors from set. Although, posting a picture of the slate with the working title in huge letters might not help this problem.

Shazam!’s Importance in the DCEU

2017 was a strange year for the DCEU. Wonder Woman garnered huge box office success and critical and audience acclaim. But Justice League suffered a tumultuous fate. As it stands, the fate of the DCEU rests with James Wan. They aren’t hanging the universe on him the way they did with Zack Snyder, but he plays an important role in the future of the DCEU.

Wan produced Sandberg’s first 2 feature films, Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. More importantly, he worked with Shazam!‘s biggest star on Furious 7: Dwayne Johnson. Johnson is a box office goldmine and he’s a savior of franchises. It’s very likely Wan convinced the studio to pursue Johnson for Black Adam and Sandberg for the director’s chair. After all, Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation were hits for Warner Bros. So, while it’s too early to say if James Wan is ushering in a new era for the DCEU, Warner Bros. sees something in him and his cohorts.

The upcoming New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Shazam! feature film scheduled for release in 2019 as part of the DC Extended Universe, with Zachary Levi and Asher Angel portraying the title role.
