Terraforming Mars Upcoming Expansions Announced
FryxGames, the developer of the popular Terraforming Mars game world, has announced two upcoming expansions for the original base game.
In a recent Dice Tower video, Tom Vasel discusses the best-selling games of January 2018. These figures are based on the number of units sold at Cool Stuff Inc., the largest online board game store. Two expansions for Terraforming Mars appeared on this list for January. The Hellas & Elysium double-sided game board expansion landed at #7, and the latest expansion, Venus Next, at #1. (You can check out my game review for Venus Next here.)
Needless to say, these latest expansions are in high demand, and will likely be best sellers as well. I know that I will immediately order them for my personal collection as soon as they become available.
During this last fall, FryxGames and BoardGameGeek held a joint contest where Board Game Geek users could submit ideas for new corporations in Terraforming Mars. The results were surprising, with an astonishing 300 entries from the Board Game Geek community. After many considerations, 3 winners were selected and playtested.
After some modifications and refinements, the final winning corporations were announced – Arcadian Communities, Splice: Tactical Genomes, and Recyclon. These new additions to Terraforming Mars will be available through the BGG Store in late spring.
Next expansion: Prelude
The next expansion for Terraforming Mars is Prelude. Prelude is a small expansion that kickstarts terraforming. It focuses on the early stages of Mars colonization and tells the background story of the corporations.
When choosing corporation and starting hand, each player also draws 4 Prelude cards and chooses 2 of them to boost their corporation. The expansion opens up powerful starting combos and increases player asymmetry.
Prelude is scheduled for release summer 2018, with a pre-release at Origins Game Fair 2018, happening June 13-17 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH.
