About Cinnamonmate Cosplay
Hey everybody! My name is Ana, I’m a geography university student, I’m 20 years old and I’m from the wonderful European county of Portugal full of wine, football, and Fado. I have been cosplaying since 2010 and my first cosplay was a Snowtrooper from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back!
How did you first get into cosplay?
I got into cosplay thanks to my dad being part of the 501st Legion
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
For now, I’m doing it for fun but who knows maybe someday I can make a living out of it
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I love making them from scratch. I want to be able to know every step of cosmaking.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It depends on a lot, I’ve had cosplays that took me one year and others that took me one week.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Hinata Hyuga is my favorite but my Saber is really close behind.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My best cosplay memory happened in 2011 when I got the change to go visit kids in a hospital with my Snowtrooper. Their faces full of joy were an important part of me wanting to cosplay more.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I really like them but I wouldn’t want to cosplay in group all the time… Sometimes I just need a little space for myself
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
Right now I’m working on Snow White (Disney) and Arturia Pendragon (Fate). Plus I would really enjoy finishing Shirayuki (Snow White with the Red Hair), Sailor Neptune (Sailor Moon), The Coon (South Park), Yuna (Sword Art Online) and Astolfo (Fate) this 2018!!!
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I see lots of people having issues with people cosplaying the “wrong” body type or skin color… Honestly, I think it’s kind of ignorant of us to judge someone by what they want to cosplay. Cosplay is about freedom of choice and I think we should respect people’s choices to cosplay.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I really enjoy anime and gaming so those are my main focus in cosplay, but inside those, I think I have a tendency to cosplay blond characters.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I guess a little bit of everything, except shopping. I really don’t enjoy seeing my bank account after I shop for supplies. But maybe sewing and photo shoots are my absolute favorites.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Department and dollar stores… I have a tendency to always find my cosplay materials there.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Being a cosplayer with mental problems is really hard. Due to my depression, I have a tendency to lose interest in cosplaying very easily. But I don’t let my depression drag me down because I know cosplay is something I love doing. I always find the courage to keep going!
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Thanks to visiting lots of children with special care or with terminal diseases I have to learn to enjoy life more, to not let my small problems to take me down.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
If you want someone to respect you, respect others! I see a lot of new cosplayers think that it’s ok to not respect other people just because they are the character x or y. Your character should not be an excuse for your actions. It’s important to have this in mind not only in cosplay but also your daily life.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It’s more divisive than ever. I think it has a lot to do with the exponential growth of the community. The fact that someone people think that they can judge others buy their cosplay being bought or something along those lines. In my opinion, those actions of ignorant judging are a huge wrong in the cosplay community nowadays. We as cosplayers need to be welcoming new people and teach them to enjoy the best parts of cosplay and most important, teach them to have fun.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Arturia Pendragon. It has been my dream cosplay for a while and I can’t wait to finally make her this year.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Not really. I don’t have that big of an issue with the money I spend in a cosplay, I just want for it to be the best cosplay it can be.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Happiness. I love cosplaying, it is one of the best parts of my life and I can’t imagine living without it. Cosplay is an art, a way for us to show our skills or our passion for a certain character. But most importantly, Cosplay for me is having fun. If you don’t have fun doing something then why are you doing it?
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Right now no, unless I had a really big health problem that made me want to give up on it.
