About Gehenna Cosplay

My nickname is Gehenna and I am from a little magical land in Central Europe called the Czech Republic (come check our beer 😉 I have started cosplaying like 2 years ago and I like or would like to test my skills on complex fantasy armors.

How did you first get into cosplay?

I’ve been an admirer of the cosplay scene for many years, but only like 2 years ago a friend of mine convinced me to create a costume of my own and start to dig in deeper in the community.

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

Cosplay for me is a hobby 🙂 On occasion, it becomes paid work which I don’t mind since it’s not only work but also an opportunity to meet and have fun with my cosplay friends at some event. But I don’t want to make it my main source of income.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I prefer to make my cosplays from scratch, but I am not opposed to the idea of buying whole costumes or getting help for some parts.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

Very much depends on the costume complexity. 2-3 months I’d say.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

My own interpretation of Deathwing / Neltharion from World of Warcraft. *roooooar*

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

It’s hard to pick just one as the best one. There’s plenty of good memories because you meeting many new and interesting people, in my country or abroad. Maybe I could mention my surprise when after an event in Poland, where I was cosplaying a dragon and as part of that costume I also tend to sometimes perform a sort of dragon roar. Then couple months later, in Austria, people came to me and requested that performance 😀

How do you feel about group cosplays?

Cosplay comes from the combination of words: costume and play. How better to play than with other cosplayers from the same universe? This way one can instantly come up with interactions and roleplay.

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

A World of Warcraft character. That’s all I’m gonna say 😉

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

People who claim someone cannot cosplay some character because of: “skin tone, gender, body type, skill, etc.”

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

Badass characters.

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

Paintjob, battle damage, weathering and clay modeling.

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

E-shops, where I can buy thermoplastics, EVA foam, resin or local fabric store

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

Worrying that the costume won’t be good enough. I struggle with it to date.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

Everyone has got an opinion, which I may or may not like. It’s not necessary to take any of them personally.

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Research. Read tutorial. Try, fail, fail some more, learn, succeed.

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

I’m IN the community only like for 2 years, I don’t feel I spotted any change.

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Lifesized Tauren Warrior Tank.

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

Sadly… NO 😀

What does cosplay mean to you?

It’s a way how to express my love for a franchise, a way to get to know like-minded people and also a relaxing hobby because you create something from scratch with your own hands.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Lack of resources I suppose – money and time.
