Noah Hawley, the creator of Legion and Fargo, has recently revealed his take on his Doctor Doom movie. What’s interesting is Hawley has taken inspiration from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Hawley told The Observer that he wanted to do something different from the other superhero movies we see today. He wants to explore Doom as the king of a European country instead of just the mad scientist.
“It’s something that [Captain America] Winter Soldier did really well, which was kind of a Cold War thriller movie out of a superhero movie. This is different than that, but it does have this idea of, and I don’t want to say too much about it, but it is a mixture of genres,” he said.
Will We See the Fantastic Four?
“The mandate is not to re-launch the Fantastic Four franchise as much as it is to take this fascinating and under-served character and really build a movie about him where we ask the question: Is he a hero? Is he a villain? What does he really want?”
“We’re able to explore these questions in a serious way,” Hawley added.
With Disney recently acquiring certain film properties of 20th Century Fox, it is unclear if the Doctor Doom movie will exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“That’s not clear to me yet,” Hawley said when asked about that factor. “I haven’t had any larger Marvel-based conversations about if they have plans for the X-Men universe or if they have plans for their other Fox-controlled comic properties. I would have to imagine there’s a plan in a drawer somewhere.”
Doctor Doom, a Political Thriller?
I believe that a Doctor Doom origin movie is a great idea. Doctor Doom is a complicated and complex villain with a rich backstory that needs to be explored more. None of the Fantastic Four movies have even come close to show how dangerous or tragic Doom really is.
Seeing Doom as the leader of Latveria could make him a more interesting character. He is seen as just an evil head of a corporation or a mad scientist. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the greatest Marvel movies ever been released. The movie was able to take Captain America to a new level by pushing him to his limits. The movie did not lose sight of who he is. If Hawley can do that same thing with Doctor Doom, then we may finally see Doom as an interesting villain.
