Cheetah Challenges Wonder Woman
Comic book movies have villain problems. Across the board, the MCU and DCEU have lacked compelling villains. Yes, there are a few breaths of fresh air (Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, Heath Ledger’s Joker), but these films usually have a hard time conveying their villains’ motivation. Such is the case with Wonder Woman. While the film was Warner and DC’s biggest hit to date, the film’s ‘baddie’ didn’t leave much of an impression on audiences. So, with Wonder Woman 2 on the way, Patty Jenkins and Co. are seeking major talent to go toe-to-toe with everyone’s favorite Amazonian princess.
Who Will Play Cheetah?
Kristen Wiig is in talks to play Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2. Wiig is best known for her work on Saturday Night Live and her roles in Bridesmaids and the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. Even though her most notable work is in comedy, she has made small appearances in dramatic films like The Martian and Mother!
Nothing is final, but fans are divided over the potential choice. Many see it as an act of stunt casting. On the other hand, comic book films find gems in hidden places. Prior to his work as Batman, Michael Keaton was primarily in comedies. Heath Ledger shook his pretty-boy persona to embody the Joker. Furthermore, comedic performers slot well into dramatic roles. Comedy requires immense skill and timing. Kristen Wiig channeled a hidden intensity in Mother! and it would be nice to see her flex those muscles one more time.
Cheetah is a major Wonder Woman villain, so the prospect of seeing the two face off on film during the Cold War is exciting. However, as the current DCEU timeline stands, Diana went into hiding after WWI. Fans can see what brought Wonder Woman back into the fray on November 1st, 2019.
