New Gods on the Silver Screen
You’ve probably seen in recent news that A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay will direct a New Gods movie set in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). While A Wrinkle in Time received mixed reviews, it’s the opinion of this writer that DuVernay can competently translate fantastical and otherworldly characters and settings to the big screen. I’m hopeful for this movie and what it can do for the DCEU. Moreover, like any good fan, I have my own thoughts on where this film should go.
So Many Characters
The pantheon of the New Gods and the cast of associated characters is massive. We’ve already seen Steppenwolf in Justice League. The New Gods movie could easily introduce characters such as Highfather, Orion, Big Barda Desaad, Granny Goodness and the Female Furies, Forager, or Kalibak. However, it might be impossible to do the entire cast justice in just one movie. It would be overwhelming for audiences, to say the least. With that in mind, there are two characters I’d like to see in particular: Darkseid and Mister Miracle.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice teased Darkseid. Some people thought Darkseid might make his debut in Justice League. Alas, fans are still waiting. The New Gods movie is the perfect place for the tyrannical ruler of Apokolips to enter the DCEU. He doesn’t have to be the focus or even the primary antagonist. His mere presence would go a long way toward providing depth and context for the world of the New Gods.
On the other hand, Mister Miracle’s story is personal and relatable. Imprisoned on Apokolips and compelled to escape and find freedom, Mister Miracle is an interesting character that opens a lot of doors for the DCEU. Moreover, he’s fairly popular right now due to the well-received eponymous series by Tom King. The world of the New Gods can be intimidatingly huge; Mister Miracle can give audiences an easy access point to feel comfortable with the wealth of material.
Connecting it Back to the DCEU
Let’s say that the plot centers around Mister Miracle escaping Apokolips. Darkseid is a part of it, but he’s not the focus. Instead, DuVernay might like to use the Female Furies as the main villains, as they hunt down the escaped prisoner. This would let us see a lot of great characters, including Big Barda, whom DuVernay recently named as her favorite superhero. If you know your comics, you know that Big Barda and Mister Miracle fall in love and that Barda defects to fight for good.
All of a sudden we have two great superheroes out of one movie. Furthermore, let’s have those characters come to Earth and meet and even join the Justice League. This helps plant the world of the New Gods firmly in the DCEU. While both realms have a wealth of material to use on their own, connecting them early on adds depth and wonder to the DCEU. Moreover, we’ll know the New Gods, and will be ready to dive into more complex and fantastical plots with the comfort of familiarity. In any case, I’m certainly excited for what happens from here.
