Bud Plant Exits San Diego Comic-Con

Bud Plant Digs Up His SDCC Roots

Legendary comic art and sketchbook vendor Bud Plant announced he is not setting up booths at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. This is the first year in 48 years that Plant is missing the show. At one point, he had as many as 11 booths at the con.

The Cons They Are A-Changin’

Bud Plant - SDCCAnother year, another iconic SDCC vendor drops out of the show. Last year, Mile High Comics announced they will no longer participate in the annual convention. This year, founding member Bud Plant announced he will not be setting up shop. It is the end of an era for the world’s largest comic book convention. But, Bud announced he is still attending the show and will visit friends and look for new sketchbooks.

On one hand, it’s sad to see these staples go. On the other, these vendors dedicated so much time and energy to the show that they deserve to hang out with their friends at the show from time to time. Furthermore, rising costs in exhibitor fees, travel time, set-up, and workday length mean a significant financial drain on vendors. Remember, comic books are still a niche market. Even though superheroes reign supreme on the large and small screens, many fans don’t make the leap over to comic books. Also, as digital comics take over the market, the demand for physical books resides mainly in collectors.

As far as SDCC is concerned, Plant’s loss is a big one, but only symbolically. He is a founding member of  San Diego Comic-Con, and he mentioned that he is departing the show on great terms with current organizers. But, the show has a year-long waiting list for vendors. As they say, the show must go on. Though the convention has pushed towards popular culture at large, it has only strengthened their numbers. Faces may change, but the San Diego Comic-Con is here for a good, long while.
