About Smolchou Cosplay

Hey! My name is Leana and I’m a cosplayer from Germany! I’ve been doing this hobby for almost 4 years now and am now 19. I hope I can inspire lots of people to keep on doing what they love!

How did you first get into cosplay?

I’ve always loved the designs of certain characters and the art style of shows, so when I found out that cosplay is an actual thing, it didn’t take long until my first wig was ordered ?

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

Both, I love the idea of combining job and a fun hobby! So I’m hoping to be able to bring both together!

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I make almost every cosplay myself unless it has some weird stitching part etc in it or I don’t have time for making it. Making cosplays is for sure the best part about this hobby, it’s nice to challenge yourself and learn how to use different crafting materials!

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

Depends, I either take like months or rush them within 3 days ?

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

Right now it’s Zelda, 2B, and Daenerys!

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

There are so many good and bad experiences, but I just love every time I’ve made a cosplay with my grandma and all the amazing creative shootings I’ve had!

How do you feel about group cosplays?

Mostly they don’t work out unless you’ve known the people for like 20 years.

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

I’m working on Panther from Persona, Season 7 Daenerys, Commander from Nier Automata, Skyward Swords Zelda and Ciri from the Witcher!

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

Blackfacing, erotic cosplays, and attitudes. I think everyone should do what they love just don’t hurt anyone.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

Strong women and amazing character designs! I love characters like Triss from the Witcher, she knows what she wants, she’s inspiring and also just so beautiful!

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

Photo shoots definitely! You can see the result of your hard work and I just love working with other creative people.

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Fabrics and worbla! I’m still trying to figure out Eva and all, but sewing is what I love the most.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

Learning how to grow some self-esteem and trust in myself. I think most cosplayers are insecure about themselves and their work and they shouldn’t be! As long as they feel comfortable as their favorite character, they should feel strong and pretty!

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

Probably that you should never stop doing what you love because it can make you so much happier!

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

If you don’t feel comfortable in a cosplay, don’t wear it. Do a cosplay makeup and wig test beforehand, it’ll just make you unhappy or insecure if you don’t like yourself in a cosplay. I’ve had someone tell me I could never wear female cosplays because I look so masculine. Well, look at me now! ?

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

It has become less connected and somewhat lost its positivity 🙁 some people see it as a competition, which it is not! Just do what you love and be nice to everyone else ?

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Rapunzel forever and always!

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

Nope, as long as I’m happy with it, money and time don’t matter!

What does cosplay mean to you?

Cosplay empowered me, gave me self-confidence and made me gain so many friends. I love that it is some sort of art and you can be as creative as you want!

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Probably if people would become more and more negative and hateful :/
