Matt Groening’s Disenchantment to Premiere in August
According to Variety, Matt Groening’s new Netflix show Disenchantment will drop its first season on 17 August 2018. Groening is best known for creating The Simpsons and the science fiction show Futurama.
More About Disenchantment
Disenchantment is an animated comedy-fantasy series. According to Netflix, “In Disenchantment, viewers will be whisked away to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they will follow the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.”
Abbi Jacobson is voicing Bean, Nat Faxon is voicing Elfo, and Eric Andre is voicing Luci. Other Groening works alums in this show will include John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, and David Herman. Other members of the cast include Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery.
Both the title of the series and its description indicate that this show will be satirical. Although fans of Futurama may prefer that show be revived (again), this might be the next best thing. Groening seems to be painting fantasy tropes with his satirical brush, and that may appeal to fans who miss his sci-fi satire. Furthermore, the animation is being done by Rough Draft Studios, which worked on Futurama.
The first season will have 20 episodes. This is a little longer than Netflix’s usual seasons. However, it is about the length of a regular network comedy season. It’s possible that Disenchantment will adhere closely to the network model.
