Who Will Watch the Watchmen?
Watchmen is one of the most acclaimed comic series of all time. Considered to be one of the top 100 novels, period, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s opus of superheroes in the time of Reagan has stood the test of time. Zack Snyder’s film adaptation of the comic, though originally critically mixed, has also become quite beloved by fans. However, there are those who consider Watchmen to be holy writ, and any media derivation to be akin to heresy. So you can imagine the volatile reaction when HBO announced they would be doing a Watchmen series on the premium network.
On Wednesday, HBO announced the cast for the upcoming series. Regina King will lead the ensemble cast. King recently starred in series showrunner Damon Lindelof’s The Leftovers. Other cast members include Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard.
Returning to Moore’s Dark World
Ever since the show was announced, people have wondered what the story would be. Some assumed it would be another adaptation. Others thought that, like Doomsday Clock, it would be a sequel. In a letter, Lindelof revealed that it would be set in the same world, but in the present day.
“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted…They will however be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with ‘Watchmen.’ The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.”
Filming has yet to be announced, nor has a premiere date been set. Word of the Nerd will continue to keep an eye on this developing story.
