John Boyega’s Hairy Star Wars Hint
In a recent interview, John Boyega confirmed he begins shooting Star Wars Episode IX on Friday. Furthermore, he dropped a subtle hint the film will jump forward in time. The key to all this speculation? His hair.
Star Wars Pushes Forward
Calling The Last Jedi divisive might be an understatement. Many fans saw the movie as a betrayal of the core concepts and themes Star Wars upheld for decades. However, critics found it a refreshing new direction for a franchise that was on the verge of stagnation. At the end of the day, this is Star Wars. And Star Wars endures because it means so much to fans for better or worse. Also, even though the last film was divisive, it was the highest grossing movie of 2017.
So, onward and upward Star Wars goes, and the next installment begins filming this week. Of course, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, and John Boyega return to the franchise as Kylo Ren, Rey, and Finn. Episode IX finds JJ Abrams back at the helm, and that means a lot. First off, Abrams’ Episode VII was slavishly devoted to the story beats that made Star Wars shine. But he also brought Driver, Ridley, and Boyega to stardom simply by announcing their roles in the film. As a result, the stars are itching to work with Abrams again and put their stamp on Star Wars.
During an interview with Yahoo! Finance, John Boyega dropped a small hint about what to look for in the next installment. Check out Boyega’s statement below.
“I can’t wait to start shooting the next and final leg of the franchise. The first step is growing out my hair, so you can wait for the trailer to see why.”
Finn’s New ‘Do
Did you catch that? It’s not much to go on, but it does provide a hint that Finn will look different in Episode IX. Now, of course, he would have new clothes, but a new hairstyle signifies a big change. Potentially, Episode IX will execute a jump in time. Jumping ahead months in Star Wars is nothing new. However, The Last Jedi picked up moments after The Force Awakens ended.
But many factors play into a potential Episode IX time jump. First is the untimely death of Carrie Fisher. General Organa was all over The Last Jedi, and the last of the original three characters still alive. The implication was that Episode IX would wrap up Leia’s story after losing her husband and brother and leading her son to redemption. Beyond that, the time jump might lead to putting some distance between Episode VIII and IX. While JJ Abrams hasn’t commented on The Last Jedi, it undid a lot of the groundwork set up by The Force Awakens. So, Abrams might put some miles between the installments to retcon some of the decisions made by Rian Johnson. Either way, the new Star Wars trilogy wraps up in December of 2019.
