Brace Yourself! Lore is Coming… in Fire and Blood
A teaser trailer has been released today for George R.R. Martin’s newest novel, Fire and Blood. The video was released on Martin’s Facebook this morning. The new novel is the latest installment in Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series, the source material for the popular HBO show Game of Thrones.
Oddly enough, Fire and Blood is not continuing the story of the several kingdoms. Instead, it is a prequel, looking back 300 years before all the drama. The book focuses on the rule of dragon-wielding Targaryen Kings and how it all fell apart. Particularly, it will cover the rule of Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon III. This is very interesting because dragons play an important in part in Game of Thrones/Song of Fire and Ice’s history. The past of dragons, their symbolism, and their extinction is often referenced in the series. Despite that, much like Jon Snow, we know nothing (or at least very little). Fire and Blood will finally fill in some of those gaps.
Although Game of Thrones fans may be enthusiastic about some more dragon history, a few may groan at a lack of a true sequel. Martin has been writing the next sequel, The Winds of Winter, since around 2010 and there has been little information on a release date. Some may be disappointed by a different book and a possible further delay. Hopefully, this prequel will prep folks for the sequel or at least scratch the itch till we learn more.
Either way, Fire, and Blood will release November 20th and up for preorder. Amazon is currently providing a discount, so you should probably check it out sooner than later.
