10 Books for the May #WotNReadingChallenge

Join Us for the May #WotNReadingChallenge

May’s #WotNReadingChallenge prompt is “A graphic novel from someone other than the Big Two”. As you probably know, the “Big Two” are comics makers DC and Marvel. To fulfill this prompt, all you have to do is read a graphic novel someone else published. Not too hard, right?

Using the suggestions below, pick one graphic novel!

1 – A Game of Thrones: The Graphic Novel, Vol. 1 adapted by Daniel Abraham and illustrated by Tommy Patterson

I would be surprised if there was a person who had never heard of Game of Thrones before. A Game of Thrones: The Graphic Novel, Vol. 1 adapts about a quarter of A Game of Thrones. Read this if you want to catch up with the cultural zeitgeist, but don’t want to spend several months in the effort.

2 – Adulthood is a Myth by Sarah Andersen

Adulthood is a Myth collects comics by Sarah Scribbles. These comics are really funny and really relatable, especially if you’re a millennial trying to adult in this exhausting world.

3 – The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1: The Faust Act by Kieron Gillen, illustrated by Jamie McKelvie

Everyone says people worship celebrities. In The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1: The Faust Act, gods are celebrities. Every 90 years, 12 gods take over the bodies of 12 young people. After 2 years, these people die.

4 – Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley

In Relish: My Life in the Kitchen, Lucy Knisely talks about how her family influenced her relationship with food. There’s a recipe (or something similar) at the end of every chapter, so you can get closer to food as well.

5 – Kill Shakespeare: A Sea of Troubles by Conor McCreery, Anthony Del Col, illustrated by Andy Belanger

Kill Shakespeare: A Sea of Troubles is a mash-up of a bunch of Shakespeare’s plays. Hamlet joins forces with King Richard III and Juliet as various groups try to find the “wizard” William Shakespeare.

6 – Paper Girls, Vol. 1 written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chiang and Matthew Wilson

Paper Girls, Vol. 1, like the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, is set in the 1980s. Unlike Stranger Things, Paper Girls centers on teenage girls as they discover some weird happenings going on in their hometown.

Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi - Pantheon Books - for the May 2018 #WotNReadingChallenge

7 – Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi

In Embroideries, Marjane Satrapi tells the story of a tea party during which older Iranian women frankly discuss sex and sexuality.

8 – Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Nimona follows the eponymous shape-shifting young girl as she tries to be the best evil henchman she can be, despite her mentor’s misgivings.

9 – Princeless: Raven the Pirate Princess Book 1: Captain Raven and the All-Girl Pirate Crew written by Jeremy Whitley and illustrated by Ted Brandt and Rosy Higgins

Although Princeless: Raven the Pirate Princess Book 1: Captain Raven and the All-Girl Pirate Crew is a spinoff of the Princeless series, also by Whitley, you don’t need to read that series to understand what’s going on in this one. After being trapped in a tower due to her brothers’ machinations, Raven is out and ready to get revenge on them. First things first: she needs to collect a crew…

10 – Boxers and Saints by Gene Luen Yang

Boxers and Saints are two graphic novels on China’s Boxer Rebellion that should be read in concert. Boxers follows a young man named Little Bao as he rebels against the Christian colonizing forces in China. Saints follows a minor character from Boxers, a Chinese girl named Vibiana who converts to Christianity.
