The Borg Set to Invade the Kelvin Timeline in Star Trek: Boldly Go

IDW recently announced that there will be a reboot of sorts to the Kelvin timeline comic series.
Titled Star Trek: Boldly Go the series will chronicle the adventures of Captain Kirk, and crew in new adventures. This series will be set following the events of the latest motion picture, Star Trek Beyond.

According to Newsrama, IDW recently announced in its December solicitations that in issue three of Boldly Go, Kirk and crew will face off with the most deadly foe of any Trek Universe: The Borg.

Star Trek Boldy Go #3 coverBackground on The Borg

Memory Alpha describes the Borg thusly:

“The Borg are a pseudo-species of cybernetic beings, or cyborgs, from the Delta Quadrant. No single individual truly exists within the Borg Collective (with the possible sole exception of the Borg Queen), as all Borg are linked into a hive mind. Their ultimate goal is the attainment of ‘perfection’ through the forcible assimilation of diverse sentient species, technologies, and knowledge. As a result, the Borg are among the most powerful and feared entities in the galaxy, without really being a true species at all.”

Prime Universe Enounters

In the Prime universe, the Federation was not exposed to the Borg until the 24th century.  Q flung the USS Enterprise D into the Path of that first Borg cube in the TNG Episode “Q Who?”.  (The Borg were briefly featured in an episode of Enterprise called, “Regeneration,” although Captain Archer had no idea who or what his foe was.)

Jean-luc Picard was assimilated into Locutus of Borg just prior to The Battle of Wolf 359.

After that first encounter Starfleet tried to quickly build a defense against the Borg, but they weren’t quick enough.  The Borg soon appeared in Federation space and kidnapped Captain Jean-luc Picard and assimilated him, transforming him into Locutus. The Borg used Picard’s knowledge to launch an attack on the Federation in a battle that would come to be known as The Battle of Wolf 359. This battle was one of the most destructive battles in the history of the Federation prior to the Dominion War.

In that costly exchange, one Borg cube, under the supposed command of Locutus, destroyed 39 starships and killed more than 11,000 Starfleet crew in a battle that lasted mere minutes.

All Hail the Queen!

In Star Trek: First Contact, we were introduced to the center of the hive mind, the one that brings order to chaos, the Borg Queen. This

was a fascinating aspect of the Borg we had never seen before and it was revealed that she had been with Locutus the whole time. She had been grooming him to be another singular intelligence within the Borg collective…a counterpoint to herself. Picard, tucked away in the recesses of his own mind resisted and was ultimately rescued from the Borg collective.

Shades of what is to come?

That was only a fraction of the background on the Borg. This was just to give you a taste of their destructive capabilities. The Federation did battle with the Borg many more times.
So, how will the Borg make it to the Kelvin timeline? Will they be native to that universe, or will they somehow tear the fabric of time and space to travel a century in the past to a parallel universe? We will find out in December when IDW releases Issue #3 of Star Trek: Boldly Go!

Star Trek: Boldly Go debuts at your local comic store in October, with issue 3 and The Borg coming in December. The issues will retail for $3.99.

So, are you hyped to see the Kelvin timeline crew take on the Borg in December? Please comment, LIKE and share and as always: “Live Long and Prosper!”
