Suicide Squad fans, rejoice. Karen Fukuhara is appearing in another comic franchise: the Amazon adaptation of The Boys. The tone of Suicide Squad mirrors The Boys in that the characters live in a morally gray area. Similar to her Suicide Squad character, Fukuhara’s character is an Asian assassin who learns to speak and find her humanity. Her character’s name is Female which further highlights the gritty nature of the show. Fukuhara joins the cast of Erin Moriarty, Antony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, Jesse T. Usher, and Nathan Mitchell.

The short-lived comics, which ran from 2008 to 2012, follow a group of CIA superhero-enforcers who are tasked with keeping corrupt superheroes in line by any means necessary. The Boys was created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and was published by Dynamite Entertainment. The vague character names are indicative of the somewhat dark content—names such as team leader Butcher, Female, and Mother’s Milk. Not really your run-of-the-mill character names but they work for the series.

The Boys doesn’t shy away from the nitty-gritty and less-than-ideal aspects of superheroes. Many “heroes” in the series have given into their superficial and corrupt side in the wake of fame, causing them to rebel and act out. The premise hasn’t been explored in such a prevalent manner prior to the series. Readers are fully immersed in the byproduct of superhero ideation—a unique take on the usual tight-laced superhero depictions we’re used to.

Eric Kripke - imdb
Eric Kripke

Eric Kripke, creator of fan-favorite shows Supernatural and Timeless, will serve as the showrunner and executive producer for The Boys. This will undoubtedly bring in new fans, as Kripke has a dedicated and passionate fanbase who steadfastly follows his projects. Fans lobbied day and night after the cancellation of Timeless last year and NBC uncharacteristically un-canceled it several days later.

The Boys is a Sony Pictures TV Studios production with Amazon and Original Films co-producing. The Boys creators Ennis and Robertson will join Kripke, Seth Rogan, Evan Goldberg, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, James Weaver, Ori Marmur and Jason Netter as co-executive producers. Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, who directed Ennis’ other project, Preacher, are dusting off their directing shoes for The Boys. Solid news on the adaptation of The Boys has been a long time coming, as it’s been in production for eight years and before it was set for TV, it was slated as a movie.

About the author

Xandra Kelley

When Xandra isn't writing or attending conventions, she's dancing around her room in Supergirl cosplay, jammin' out to Britney Spears. She once had to stash her lightsaber behind a bush at the Rogue One premiere because the theater had a lame "no Kyber crystal weapons" policy. Her friends say she's the poster child for Gryffindor and there's not a bully or injustice she won't stand up to. A lot of people think Xandra is from California but she was born and raised in New Jersey and has no clue why she seemingly talks with a Valley Girl cadence - perhaps it's because of her unending Clueless rewatches.
