Gary Gygax Leads a Digital Revolution

Dungeons and Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax’s unpublished works will become video games thanks to The Gygax Trust and crowd-funding platform Fig. Fig launched as an alternative to Kickstarter in 2015. The site focuses exclusively on video games.

Few names loom larger in geekdom than Gary Gygax. He changed the game (literally) in 1974 when Dungeons & Dragons hit shelves. Certainly, D&D changed the cultural landscape forever and certified the man as a legend in his own time. However, as a creative, he didn’t only play in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Like many artists, the game designer created worlds for fun.

Now, through the combined efforts of The Gygax Trust and Fig, fans can experience the unreleased worlds of the patriarch of polyhedral dice. The two companies are partnering to crowdfund video games based on a previously unreleased IP created by the ultimate dungeon master. Currently, details are scarce surrounding the project, but Alex Gygax said in an interview with Polygon: “He always had the intention of taking certain product lines and transferring them to the digital realm, it just never came to fruition.”

Finding the proper home for a project this important is a tough job. However, the Gygax family are taking a page out of their old man’s book. Dungeons & Dragons is a community-based game. Without people gathering around to participate as a group, the experience isn’t the same. So, a crowdfunding platform is the natural home for this content.

However, Fig is unlike any other crowdfunding site. Fig allows backers to join as investors, thus allowing them to share the game’s profits. It’s a radical and potentially lucrative idea. More often than not, Fig projects are successful. But, the stakes are much higher. Because of this, the marriage of platform and property must be in lockstep. Fortunately, crowdfunding and Gary Gygax’s brain are tailor-made for each other.
