Kickstarter Hot Picks – May 1-15, 2018

Kickstarter is the world’s largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects. 2017 marked the first time that the Games category took the top spot on Kickstarter, with the number of Tabletop Games projects having grown significantly, up 18% from 2016.

Tabletop Games have constantly grown over the past few years, both in terms of the total amount of money raised, and the number of projects funded. After a record year in 2016, the subcategory grew again, by +36% in 2017. The number of funded projects grew by +20%. There is no doubt that Kickstarter is a serious driving force in the content being supplied in the board gaming industry.

In the latest roundup of Kickstarter Hot Picks, we fight zombie aliens in space, outrun giant balls of fire on an island, and revisit iconic characters and fights from the Street Fighter universe.

Let’s take a look at these hot Kickstarter campaigns…

Zombicide: Invader

Find the best weapons, learn new skills, and work together to survive a deadly invasion of zombie aliens!

Zombicide Invader
Zombicide Invader

Zombicide: Invader, by CMON, is a standalone cooperative board game for 1 to 6 players, taking their hit Zombicide game and bringing the action into the far reaches of space. Players control a group of Survivors trying to defend their remote mining outpost from a swarm of infected aliens controlled by the game itself. The goal is simple – choose a mission, complete its objective, and kill as many Xenos as possible without dying.

Zombicide: Invader Gameplay

This sci-fi interpretation of Zombicide is as sleek as ever, playing fast and furious. The optimized rules reduce setup time and make the game flow quickly, focusing the action on the struggle between the Survivors and the Xenos. Survivors can be civilians or soldiers, each having specific skills. They all play together as a team, trading equipment, recovering vital data, unveiling dark secrets, and protecting and rescuing each other. It takes cooperation to complete mission objectives and win.

Most of the time, the Xenos are predictable. But there is power in numbers, and they have malicious strategies. (The Spoiler Abomination spreads an alien substance called Mold in the space complex, slowly turning it into a Xenos’ nest.) More weapons and carnage move players towards victory. But the Xenos are attracted to the onslaught, bringing more to the fight. It’s a balance in strategy for victory.

The Civilian Pledge of $100 includes the Zombicide: Invader base game, exclusive survivor Allyson Cardenal, and all unlocked stretch goals. The Soldier Pledge of $150 includes the base game, the Zombicide: Black Ops expansion, exclusive survivors Allyson Cardenal and Lt. Massimo Torriani, and all unlocked stretch goals.

The campaign ends on Thursday, May 3, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 976% funded.

Fireball Island: The Curse of Vul-Kar

Fireball Island: The Curse of Vul-Kar is the highly anticipated, fully updated release of the 1980’s classic game, Fireball Island.

"<yoastmark

A highly interactive game of press-your-luck, card play, and set collection—but mostly GIANT FIREBALLS. Restoration Games is building upon the excitement of the game that gamers fondly remember, improving the gameplay to the standards and demands of the modern-day gamer. Even those who have never played it before will appreciate it as a fun, exciting game for kids, families, and gamers alike.

Fireball Island: The Curse of Vul-Kar improves on the art, components, and gameplay of the original game, maximizing on the “delightful chaos” of its predecessor. The new island gameboard is bigger, taller, faster, and cooler—all while fitting in a smaller box. While the fireballs are unpredictable, the redesigned elements give players more control over their actions and more meaningful choices.

Fireball Island Gameplay

Gameplay is simple and easy to learn. The goal is to grab three different-colored snapshots from each part of the island (and as many treasures as possible) and get back to the helipad. The player who has the most points when the helicopter arrives or when the scar is full wins the game.

On their turn, a player chooses one of their two action cards to move their pawn and perform a special action. Along the way, players earn points for collecting sets of treasure. If they get knocked down, they’ll lose a treasure but gain a useful souvenir. If they draw a Cataclysm, Vul-Kar gets to take a turn, and the island comes alive with fireballs that may not bode well for the players in their path.

The Feel the Burn pledge of $60 receives one copy of the base game, one Treasure Trove expansion (with new cards added as stretch goals are unlocked), and all unlocked stretch goals. The Full Vul-Kar pledge of $130 receives the complete Fireball Island experience, including one base game, all three expansions (The Wreck of the Crimson Cutlass, The Last Adventurer, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Bees), one Treasure Trove expansion, and all unlocked stretch goals.

The campaign ends on Thursday, May 3, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 858% funded.

Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game

Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game is an exciting new high-quality pre-painted miniatures game from Jasco Games, officially licensed by Capcom and designed & created by Joe Vargas, a.k.a. AngryJoe of the AngryJoeShow. Play as your favorite characters across Street Fighter’s iconic roster by rolling dice and playing cards from fighter-specific battle decks split into Projectiles, Specials, Strikes and Event cards.

Street Fighter The Miniatures Game

For this campaign, the highlight is the high quality pre-painted “collector-sized” miniatures. They are more like small collectible statues that are great for display, even if they will not see gameplay at all.

Universal Tactics System

The game uses the brand new Universal Tactics System (which will be cross-compatible with future Universal Tactics System sets), allowing 2 to 6 players to simulate fights in Versus Mode, Free for All Mode, or Team Mode. There is also a Boss Mode that offers 3 versus 1 Cooperative Play against one powerful Boss.

Players can create their dream scenarios of legendary fights on 3D destructible terrain inspired by the video games. Use innovative combo chain attacks with powerful super and ultra combos for impressive finishes.

The base pledge of $80 receives the Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game base game. The Street Fighter pledge of $140 receives the base game, the Boss Expansion (M.Bison and Akuma), and all unlocked stretch goals with additional Fighters & Decks. The all-in World Warrior Pledge of $280 receives the base game, the Boss Expansion, the Street Fighter Alpha Character Expansion, three additional character expansions, and all unlocked stretch goals with additional Fighters & Decks.

The campaign ends on Friday, May 4, 2018. The project has reached its goal and is currently 337% funded.
