Kelly Marie Tran Has Left Instagram, Are You Happy Now?
According to multiple outlets, Kelly Marie Tran, best known for playing Rose in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, has deleted all of her Instagram posts. Technically, we don’t know why she’s decided to do this. We don’t have any official word from her. The twitter post below, posted by a Star Wars fan account, is the only semi-official word we have on the matter.

Maybe she’s deleted her Instagram posts for some other reason, one that’s got nothing to do with fandom. Let’s sit for a moment and contemplate Kelly Marie Tran having a nice, technology-free day.
However, it’s likely that harassment played a part in her decision to leave Instagram. By all accounts, Kelly Marie Tran’s Instagram account posted many positive posts, and often illustrated her enthusiasm for the Star Wars franchise. Despite that, many trolls have attached a number of harassing comments to her Instagram posts.
This wouldn’t be the first time that a Star Wars actress has been harassed into deleting their Instagram account. Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, deleted her entire Instagram account last year. Her decision was influenced by people criticizing her looks when she tried to discuss gun safety. However, Ridley still appeared in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, since harassment online doesn’t prevent women from succeeding in their careers. Although online harassment may demoralize women, a woman being harassed isn’t going to prevent them from appearing in your favorite franchise. It’s not clear why harassers seem to think that it will.
What can be done about the persistent problem of Internet harassment in fandom? Is there a way to protect women, especially women of color, from fandom harassment? Talk about it in the comments, and try to do better in fandom spaces.
