Did You Know These Celebs Were Comic Book Fans?

With more comic book films coming out each year, more celebrities get to join a culture many fans love. The interesting thing is, there are some famous people who were comic book fans long before the movies. The media would usually represent comic book fans as socially awkward and unattractive. 

Comic books are no longer for nerds and losers. There are a countless number of celebrities that have admitted to their geek status. Word of the Nerd has taken the time to list some celebrities you may not have known were fans. 

1. Elvis Presley

The King of Rock and Roll himself was a massive comic book fan. Many sources have cited that he was a big fan of Captain Marvel, Jr. In fact, his famous hair with the spit curl was influenced by Captain Marvel, Jr. comics. His white jumpsuit was based on the hero’s costume, including the high collars, lightning belt buckle, and short cape.

2. Olivia Munn

Olivia Munn is best known in the comic book community as Psylocke from X-Men: Apocalypse. What fans may not know is that Olivia Munn is an actual geek. She listed Y: The Last Man as her favorite comic book of all time. Olivia Munn also wrote a book titled Suck It, Wonder Woman!: The Misadventures of a Hollywood Geek.

3. Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne is an incredible actor with a wide variety of films that people enjoy. He has starred in films from The Matrix to the more recent Ant-Man and the Wasp. Fishburne is one of the few actors who has starred in both a DC and a Marvel movie. He was Perry White in Man of Steel, and will now be playing Bill Foster/Goliath in Ant-Man and the Wasp. While doing press for Ant-Man and the Wasp, he revealed that he was always a fan of comics since he was a kid. It was something he and director Peyton Reed had in common. 

4. Eminem

Eminem is one of the biggest names in rap music to this day. He has had 10 #1 albums on the Billboard Top 200. He also had 13 #1 singles worldwide. In 2009, he was named Artist of the Decade by Billboard magazine. What fans don’t realize is that he is a huge comic book fan. He wanted to be a comic book artist growing up. Over the years he has gained a huge comic book collection with many rare items. One of those rare items is Amazing Fantasy #15, the first appearance of Spider-Man. He has also made references to Spider-Man, Batman, and others in his lyrics. He even starred in a comic book alongside the Punisher. 

5. Nicolas Cage

Many know Nicolas Cage as one of the craziest actors of our generation. He has starred in a variety of films including National Treasure, Ghost Rider, and others. Something Cage has not really made public is the fact that he is a huge comic book fan. Not only did he star in movies like Ghost Rider and Kick-Ass, he almost played Superman. Tim Burton’s Superman Lives would have had Nicolas Cage in the title role.

Nicolas Cage got his last name from comic book character Luke Cage. He has bought and owned rare comics such as Action Comics #1, Incredible Hulk #1, Fantastic Four #1, etc. Nicolas Cage’s second son is named Kal-El Coppola Cage, of course named after Superman. Soon enough, Nicolas Cage will get to voice Superman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. (And seriously, click that link if you want to see Cage dressed as Superman—it’s weird and awesome. -Editor) He will also voice Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
