Black Manta: Beyond DC’s Aquaman

Aquaman still - Black Manta

The end of the Doom and Gloom era has arrived and new DC villains are here for the party. Well, not so new, really. More of featuring other villains and developing their characters without making it too fast and rushed for comfort. Such is the instance, and obviously the beginning, for Black Manta. His real name? David Hyde. Undoubtedly one of DC’s best villains, Black Manta’s character will debut in James Wan’s Aquaman as a secondary antagonist with Orm as the primary.  However, he’s not the backup villain of the story, nor will this be the last time we see him.

On Aquaman

The hype is on as Aquaman‘s trailer amassed more than 36 million views in two weeks. The trailer is different from the usual DC trailers we’ve seen in the past. A short scene of Black Manta, played by a ripped Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, removing his helmet caused intrigue to rise among the fandom and potential viewers. Such intrigue comes with the worry that this will be the last of him.

A set visit last year shows an enthusiastic Peter Safran with a reassurance for fans that Black Manta won’t be gone after this movie. The Aquaman producer is genuine with his plans of bringing Black Manta to the big screen and he obviously succeeded. He stated how the iconic antagonist will play a big part in the movie:

“We love Manta. From the early days of developing the screenplay he’s just such a great antagonist and he’s such a fan favorite, and the response every time people hear that he’s in the movie or that it’s confirmed that he’s in the movie they’re thrilled about it. So we always wanted to give him his storyline, and if Orm is the primary antagonist, then Manta is certainly is a very strong secondary antagonist. There is a connection between Orm and Manta that will be revealed that helps make him a more integral part of the story.”

The Rumor

The rumor of Black Manta’s supposed big-screen debut stems from the post-credits scene in Justice League. With the interview dating back to last year, plans for Black Manta have shifted. Not all plans, though, as he plays a part in Aquaman and might, hopefully, be a part of the Legion of Doom and the Injustice League. Not only that; Aquaman still has sequels too. The possibilities are endless, as these are not the only supervillain teams he is a part of, or heroes he’s fought.

Safran sees that too.

“We certainly have every intention that Manta plays a very large role in the DC universe. He has to. He’s just too great. And we give him his origin story in this movie. We do show how Manta, that we see in the comic books, became that character…”

The Future for Black Manta – Bright and Blurry

Black Manta: Beyond DC's AquamanBringing out great villains? Great trailers and plans? It seems Warner Bros. and DC are finally listening to the fans. The question now is, after Aquaman, when will we see Black Manta again? Up till now, there have been no major announcements on DC’s future except for Wonder Woman 1984 and Shazam. With the incredible footage, awesome photos, and leaked toys, Aquaman has set the bar high before we can even see it. Its continuation, still no concrete confirmation other than Safran’s words, in which we trust.

Aquaman will hit the theaters December 21st, 2018. An early Christmas gift to us all.

Please don’t be a disappointment!
