Discovery Goes On Its Own Search for Spock

Star Trek: Discovery Season Two Trailer Shown At NYCC

Star Trek Discovery season 2 trailerComing off a fantastic first season, Star Trek: Discovery shows promise for an even better season two. Season one picked up one Empire Award and two Saturn awards.

So many things happened in season one. Pain, loss, war, betrayal, revenge, redemption, alternate universes. Mixed with same-sex relationships, dropping the f-bomb (twice) and having it all wrapped up with a pay for access streaming service, it is difficult to believe that Discovery is such a success in the rating ratings as well as with fans.

The first season ended with the Discovery encountering the USS Enterprise after receiving a distress signal from Captain Christoper Pike. Pike commanded the Enterprise before James T. Kirk. This led to a lot of speculation from fans. The most important question fans had was whether they would get to see Spock…and who would portray him?

Watch the trailer that was shown at NYCC this weekend. Then keep reading for a breakdown.

The Klingons

There are a few brief shots of the new, newly redesigned Klingons. The Klingons will get yet another facelift to hopefully look more acceptable to fins. There is also a shot of what looks like a Klingon D-7 battlecruiser. The design exactly matching the classic D-7. The appearance of which may be some kind of plot element. The design of the Klingon ships thus far has been a radical departure of ships seen in other Trek series.

The Emperor’s New Clothes

Star Trek Discovery season 2 trailer (4)Captain Philippa Georgiou’s (Michelle Yeoh) mirror universe counterpart Emperor Georgiou is now a member of Section 31. Section 31 is a top-secret and unsanctioned arm of Starfleet tasked with maintaining the security of the Federation by any means necessary. The group was first introduced during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It was also active during Star Trek: Enterprise, confirming its existence long before the Federation was ever established.

Georgiou’s help is once again enlisted at some point during season two. Her presence on the Discovery signifies that the situation is desperate. Starfleet used her in season one to deal a crippling blow to the Klingons in order to end the war. Having her on board will require the Discovery crew to be extra cautious. She clearly can’t be trusted.

Captain’s Courageous

Star Trek Discovery season 2 trailerChristopher Pike is a Trek character that has been in need of some additional development. Pike (Jeffery Hunter) first appeared in the first pilot episode for the original series. The NBC commissioned another pilot when the original was rejected and new actors and characters were written in. The first pilot was repurposed into the only two-part original series episode The Menagerie.  The 2009 movie reboot of Star Trek re-introduced Captain Pike played by Bruce Greenwood. Pike later died in Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Anson Mount looks like he will bring a unique and refreshing take to Captain Pike. The true demeanor of a Starfleet captain and the drastic opposite of the late Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs). Pike puts his ship and crew ahead of the mission and appears to inspire the loyalty that Lorca was unable to.

Another character lost since the original Trek pilot, Number One gets a long overdue resurrection. Originally played by Majel Barrett, the character immediately sparked controversy. Studio execs were uncomfortable with a woman as second in command. Gene Roddenberry sacrificed the character in order to keep Spock (another controversial element) on the ship in the second pilot.

Actress Rebecca Romijn will play Number One and is a near dead ringer for Majel Barrett. There is no doubt that both Barrett and Roddenberry would approve.

Will Fans Grok Spock?

Back in August the casting of Ethan Peck (Ethan Peck) as Spock was announced. Fans have been relatively quiet about the news, which is unusual. There was quite a bit of speculation over whether Zachary Quintos would assume the role. Casting Peck quickly put any doubts to rest. This is the first look of Peck as Spock who is sporting a full beard. We haven’t seen Spock with facial hair since the original series episode Mirror, Mirror. Ironically, the Mirror Universe was first introduced in that episode. Could that be just a coincidence?

Spock, of course, is the son of Ambassador Sarek (James Frain) who is also the adoptive father of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). The dynamic between Spock and Burnham will be of particular interest to fans as the season unfolds. Sarek has shown favoritism of Spock over Burnham, so there is the high probability that animosity between the two is there.

Ethan Peck is the grandson of legendary actor Gregory Peck.

Other Relationships Rekindled

Star Trek Discovery season 2 trailerAt some point in season two, Saru (Doug Jones) is gravely injured and there is an emotional moment between him and Burnham. She and Saru had a tumultuous relationship in season one stemming from her betrayal of Captain Georgiou. The two manage to repair the fractured relationship by the end of the season.

Scenes of now Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Lieutenant Stamets (Anthony Rapp) are shown including what appears to be the removal of some type of alien or parasite from Tilly’s body. However, the scenes don’t tell us much about these two characters for the next season.

Amanda (Mia Kirshner) is seen with Burnham expressing concern for Spock. Amanda has shown the warmth and compassion that you’d expect and has embraced Burnham as a daughter. Their relationship, much simpler less complicated than with Sarek.

Will Discovery Boldly Go…Again?

A lot of critics and fans approached Discovery with guarded enthusiasm. After what can undoubtedly be called a successful first season, can the series capture the same magic again? Judged merely by the two trailers released so far, fans have a lot to be excited about.

The second season of Star Trek: Discovery premieres new episodes Thursdays on CBS All-Access beginning January 17.
