Golden Globes Nominees Announced

76th Golden Globes Nominees AnnouncedOn Thursday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for this year’s Golden Globes. The prestigious award ceremony will be held and televised on January 6th, is one of the highest honors for film and television. At the same time, the hosts for the program were announced. Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg will host the ceremony.

The film Vice, a critical biopic of Dick Cheney, leads the film nominations with six nominations. Other highly nominated films include the remake of A Star Is BornThe Green Book, and The Favourite. In television, the hot contender in a year without Game of Thrones is the latest instalment of American Crime Story. The anthology series’ second series focused on the murder of fashion icon Gianni Versace. Other hot contenders include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and A Very English Scandal.

A surprising, for some, entry into the Best Picture nominees is Black Panther. Typically, the superhero genre is never nominated for the major awards categories. Instead, they are often forced to stay within the realm of the technical awards, such as special effects or makeup. This rule is broken from time to time. The late Heath Ledger won his posthumous Oscar, after all, for portraying the Joker in The Dark Knight.

However, this has led to certain corners of the Internet griping that this nomination is to show how “tolerant” Hollywood is. However, the majority of Black Panther‘s fellow nominees are either led by people of color or women. Only one film, A Star Is Born, has white people as leads. Bohemian Rhapsody, the other surprise contender, is led by an Egyptian actor. The other two films, BlacKkKlansman and If Beale Street Could Talk, are also predominantly African American led.

While the Golden Globes are getting underway, there is a question about what will be the nominees for the Academy Awards. Often, the winners at the Golden Globes are considered bellwethers for the Oscar contenders. However, the Oscars tend to still be predominantly dominated by films that lack diversity. There have been “upsets”, such as when Moonlight beat La La Land, but it is rare. The Academy, despite attempts, is still predominantly white, male and old.

The upcoming Oscars also is already mired in controversy, with its chosen host, Kevin Hart, having to withdraw after homophobic tweets surfaced. Can the Oscars do what the Globes does and have a diverse slate this year? We will see when they make their nominations in the new year. As of right now, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga lead their packs and have the best odds to win the Best Actor and Best Actress award at the upcoming Oscars.

As for the Oscars host…can you just get Ellen again? She at least brought pizza AND made sure the delivery guy got a tip!
