Naomi Novik’s Novel, A Deadly Education, Is Turning Into A Film
A Deadly Education, the first novel in Naomi Novik‘s newest series already has great news to boast about. It’s on the way to becoming a feature film! An impressive feat, since the novel is facing a September release date.
A Deadly Education
A Deadly Education is the first novel in Naomi Novik’s Scholomance series. Novik is perhaps best known for her novels Spinning Silver and Uprooted. That alone is enough to have fans excited about any future novel of hers.
As you can probably guess from the title, Scholomance is a school for those magically gifted. Unfortunately, it is also a school with high stakes. Failure means death. End of story. That is until El begins digging into things a little deeper.
The journey to graduation is made more harrowing by the fact that there are no instructors, save the house itself. That very house will be responsible for your success – or your failure. All you need to do is follow a few very (deceptively) simple rules.
With A Deadly Education‘s release date nearing ever sooner, several companies sought to gain the rights to the movie adaptation. But it was Universal Pictures who ultimately won that war, earning the right to bring the novel to the big screen.
While we’re all excited about the news, it is unfortunately still fresh. Meaning we have only so many details to work with. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman have been pulled on board as producers.
The Hollywood Reporter also reported the adaptation’s logline:
“Enter a school of magic unlike any you have ever encountered. There are no teachers, no holidays, friendships are purely strategic, and the odds of survival are never equal. Once you’re inside, there are only two ways out: You graduate or you die. El Higgins is uniquely prepared for the school’s many dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out untold millions — never mind easily destroy the countless monsters that prowl the school. Except, she might accidentally kill all the other students, too. So El is trying her hardest not to use it… that is unless she has no other choice.” A Deadly Education is set to release on September 29th, 2020. So if you find yourself too excited to wait for the movie, be sure to dive into the novel!
