Copeland will play a villainous version of the comics character Atom Smasher. The CW describes the character as:
“One of the most powerful enemies we encounter this season, Atom Smasher has come to Central City to kill The Flash. His incredible strength and ability to grow to enormous size makes him more than a match for Flash and the entire S.T.A.R. Labs team will have to come together to find a way to defeat him.”
This characterization of Atom Smasher is a broad departure from the comics, since Atom Smasher is usually written as allied with The Flash and other heroes, as he is a godson to a version of The Atom. However, the one story line in which Atom Smasher (also known as Al Rothstein) acted in a villainous manner involved time travel, which The Flash has featured more than once, including in the first season finale. This could indicate that The Flash’s Atom Smasher may become an ally to Barry Allen and S.T.A.R. Labs once he has fixed the issue that is causing him to want to kill The Flash. He could also be from Earth-2, because that story line will come up this season. We will have to wait and see.
This is not Copeland’s first acting role. Acting wise, Copeland is known for his role of Dwight Hendrickson on the SyFy channel show Haven. That character also has a supernatural ability (the unfortunate talent of attracting bullets), so Copeland has experience working on genre shows.
It will be interesting to see how this character is adapted on The Flash.
