Could Agent Carter Replace Roseanne?

Roseanne Gets Canned

Following Roseanne‘s cancellation in light of the star’s racist tweets, ABC has a hole in their fall schedule. Many vocal fans are calling for the network to replace the sitcom with a third season of Marvel’s Agent Carter.

Twitter Outs Roseanne’s Racism

Twitter is a wonderful and awful place. On one hand, it’s this author’s personal favorite social media platform. The connections and friendships I have fostered on Twitter are great and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. On the other hand, there’s a ton of racists on Twitter. Unfortunately, the site’s leadership has done nearly nothing to mitigate the hate speech.

Earlier this week, Roseanne Barr, comedian and star of Roseanne on ABC tweeted a horrifically racist comment about former Barack Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. Rightfully, the backlash to Roseanne’s comments was immediate. Hours after the tweet, ABC announced they were canceling Roseanne for good. The sitcom resurged this year as a mid-season darling, though as the season continued, its ratings dropped. However, ABC greenlit the revival for a second season.

Could Agent Carter Replace Roseanne?

could Agent Carter replace Roseanne on ABC?Given the announcement of Roseanne‘s cancellation, ABC must fill a gap in their fall scheduling. A vocal Agent Carter fanbase is clamoring for a third season of the popular Marvel show. Agent Carter is a founding member of S.H.I.E.L.D., played by Hayley Atwell. She found popularity as an aide to Captain America in his first movie, and ABC gave her a television series detailing her exploits following Captain America: The First Avenger. The show received rave reviews in its first two seasons, but was canceled in 2016.

The cancellation shocked fans since the series hadn’t reached a satisfying endpoint. As a matter of fact, the second season set up a third season where Agent Carter was living in Los Angeles. So, could an Agent Carter revival take the place of Roseanne?

Certainly, it would be poignant. A show about a former Nazi-hunter replacing a racist who once dressed as Hitler baking gingerbread men for a photo shoot is certainly poignant. However, there are many points to consider. First, Roseanne is a half-hour sitcom. Agent Carter is an hour-long drama. It’s likely ABC would choose a show that matches the former show’s runtime. Second, and most importantly, is the budget. A sitcom is very cheap to produce. The sets only need three walls and they are filmed with multiple cameras. A show like Agent Carter is effects-heavy, full of action and stunt work, and films using a single camera.

So, while it’s never over until it’s over, the odds of Agent Carter replacing Roseanne are slim. Whatever happens, let’s hope that ABC learns their lesson and never hires another volatile personality as the star of one of their flagship shows. They’ve been around for years and should know better.
