AHOY Comics Publishing Second Coming
A while back DC’s more “mature” imprint of creator-owned series, Vertigo Comics, announced they were coming back with some brand new series. Seven different titles were announced, like Goddess Mode, American Carnage, Hex Wives, and Border Town (which canceled with its own controversy). In that list was a book from writer Mark Russell (Wonder Twins, The Flintstones) called Second Coming. The synopsis was that God sends Jesus back to confront superhero Sun-Man and Jesus learns what people are doing with his teachings. Apparently being published by an imprint of DC comics caught the attention of conservative groups and a petition was signed. DC then decided it would not publish the series. Well, now AHOY Comics has decided to publish it.
Any Press Is Good Press
I am sure Mark Russell and artist Richard Pace are pretty excited this has made such big news. Vertigo’s new launch hasn’t really been selling (not that any comic really pulls in the cash). More than likely this book would have been published and sold around the same amount all the other series have. Then it would have gone away. But people causing an uproar will probably make it sell a little more. I mean, I know Mark Russell’s name because I read a lot of comics, but it’s not like people are busting down doors to pick up his new books, either. If people really didn’t want it to sell, or the general public to know about it, they probably should have just ignored it. News flash: a majority of people do not read comics, especially non-superhero books from a smaller imprint!
Mark Russell is not new to writing about religion or the Christian Church. Comicbook.com notes, “Writer Mark Russell has previously written two acclaimed prose books about the Bible: the national bestselling God Is Disappointed in You and its follow-up Apocrypha Now, both illustrated by Shannon Wheeler and published by Top Shelf Productions. The Second Coming series is Mark Russell’s first comic book series about God and religion.”
So AHOY Comics will publish Second Coming. I am sure the first issue will make a pretty good blip 0n the radar for them with all this news. If the series turns out to be good, then hey, good for AHOY. Mark Russell is a talented writer so, who really knows, but it does have the chance. If people really wanted this not to be read they should have just been quiet. Comic books are doing a pretty good job of that on their own…sadly. So, go read some comic books and be cool!
