Anson Mount is Black Bolt in Inhumans

Anson Mount will play Black Bolt, the leader of The Inhumans, in ABC’s upcoming television series Deadline reports. This news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon will play Maximus the Mad on the show.

The Inhumans’ History

The story of the Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is fascinating. Prior to the start of the MCU, Marvel sold the rights to some of their most beloved heroes. Fox and Sony, respectively, held the rights to properties like X-Men and Spider-Man. The partnership proved lucrative, and soon, Marvel began making their own films. However, they were posed with a problem; they couldn’t turn to a lot of their tent pole properties into films. As such, Marvel based films around C-Tier heroes such as Iron Man and Captain America. They even announced Ant-Man at the MCU’s outset. Those movies proved successful, but Marvel had an X-Men shaped hole in their universe. Enter the Inhumans.

Anson Mount InhumansOriginally announced as a film, Inhumans would explore the aftermath of the first half of The Avengers: Infinity War. However, amidst a series of release date changes, Inhumans went missing from Marvel’s release schedule. Marvel initially offered no explanation for the switch, but the success of Guardians of the Galaxy filled the misunderstood superhero family void with piles of money. So, Marvel announced an Inhumans television program on ABC. The move comes organically, as the Inhumans are a staple of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have encountered members of the Inhumans, they have not met their leader, Black Bolt.

Black Bolt

Marvel announced Anson Mount will fill Black Bolt’s spandex on Inhumans.  The challenge with bringing Black Bolt to life is that he can’t speak without leveling a building. His power to harness electrons is linked to the speech center of his brain, forcing him to communicate via sign language or a proxy. Mount played Jim Steele on AMC’s Hell on Wheels. According to head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, Mount is ready to tackle the role of Black Bolt head on:

Anson loves the challenge of playing a character who will only communicate silently. His enthusiasm mixed with his imposing almost regal persona made it easy to see why he is our Black Bolt.

Marvel is putting a lot of stock into the Inhumans series. The first two episodes are being shot with IMAX cameras and will see a theatrical release. This is a cool way for fans to have their cake and eat it too with the Inhumans movie off the table. At this rate, the entire cast of Boiler Room will be in a comic book property sooner or later.
