Back in 1985 when the famed duo Mario and Luigi first appeared and you could hunt your first virtual duck, Atari brought something to the gaming table that had never been seen before in the arcade; a dungeon crawl game by the name of Gauntlet. As the first of its kind, it paved the way for many to follow including more current heavy-hitters like the Diablo series, Demon’s Souls, and Sacred.
Over the past 30 years, there have been a multitude of remakes and rehashes of this hack-and-slash and have it even made its way onto console with the last two installments Dark Legacy and Seven Sorrows for Playstation 2. This time around Warner Bros is resurrecting it through their WB Games Vault Program where they aim to bring back many of our childhood memories of arcade games through updated graphics and gameplay while keeping the original features and fantasies that we all loved intact.
The main focus shown in the official trailer is to slash, blow up, bash and shoot your way through hordes and collect treasure. With three friends at your side, you may control the Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard or Elf, each with their strengths and weaknesses, to take on all kinds of baddies through the halls of dungeon after dungeon, working your way towards the final showdown. CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, Johan Pilestedt had this to say about the developer’s goal with their take on Gauntlet. “Gauntlet is one of the original and best known video game properties and we are looking forward to creating a fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece.” This isn’t the first arcade rodeo for Arrowhead either, as they’ve also brought us other top-down multiplayers such as Magicka and Helldivers.
The date of battle is September 3, 2014. Have your axes , spells and arrows at the ready for when this updated classic comes to Steam, SteamOS and later shipments of Steam Machines. It’s going down.
