The Phantasm Unmasked In HD

Fans of Batman: The Animated Series are nothing if not passionate. Many hold the series from the early 1990’s as a high watermark for superhero storytelling in any format. Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s Gotham was full of the atmosphere dotting the landscape of Tim Burton’s Batman films. But it also told rich, theme heavy stories reminiscent of Batman’s comics in the 1980s. The winning combination spawned several films, but only one released to theaters.

Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm released in theaters on Christmas Day 1993. The film garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, even those unfamiliar with the source material. But, the movie died on the vine during its theatrical run. However, upon its release to home video, Mask Of The Phantasm found new life. Kids rented and purchased it as part of their Batman collections, and parents loved the dark overtones and twisty narrative. The film developed a cult following, and remains beloved to this day.

Batman Mask of the PhantasmSo, finally, Warner Bros. is giving Mask Of The Phantasm a proper Blu-Ray release. This marks the first official HD release of the film. And the best news is that it is available for purchase next month. The list price for the disc is $21.99. Also, the only special feature listed is the theatrical trailer. The disc also boasts 16:9 widescreen and 4:3 pan and scan versions of the film.

Honestly, this news is a mixed bag. On one hand, one of Batman’s most beloved cinematic adventures is receiving a pristine new home video release. On the other hand, it lacks any real depth in its supplemental materials. The film is bound to make its way into many a Batfan’s collection, but casual fans have to decide if the $21.99 price point is worth it. Of course, fans itching for a more contemporary Batman tale can head over to San-Diego Comic-Con. The latest Batman animated film, Batman and Harley Quinn is debuting at the annual convention.
