It seems that the various problems that The Batman has had recently may be coming home to roost. As reported by SuperHeroHype, recently hired director Matt Reeves may have a contractual issue preventing him from starting filming on The Batman this year.
Troubles Plaguing The BatmanThe Batman has had a number of issues in its pre-production phase. Ben Affleck, who plays the eponymous vigilante, was originally set to direct the film himself. However, he decided that he could not give both the roles of the film’s star and the director the time they deserved, so he decided to give up the latter. This change necessitated the hiring of a new director. At first, it seemed that the replacement director would surely be Matt Reeves, but he suddenly left the talks. However, he rapidly returned and is now the director for the upcoming The Batman. Is this director drama done yet?
It turns out there may be further issues regarding Reeves’ direction. Since he’s contracted to promote his and 20th Century Fox’s upcoming film War for the Planet of the Apes until June, it’s likely that he won’t be able to get around to filming The Batman until next year. This, in turn, will push back the release of the film until some unspecified date. This speculation should be taken with a grain of salt, since The Batman may be seen as a project with such a priority status that filming is pushed through earlier than this timeline would suggest.
In related news, Ben Affleck recently completed treatment for alcohol addiction. Although this seems like it could have affected his involvement. It’s also important to note that The Batman has not been officially green-lighted yet, but it would be strange at this point to not continue with the project.
