Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight May Not Return

Ben Affleck as Batman

Fans have loved Ben Affleck and his take on Batman since Batman v Superman. While there were many criticisms, there was a lot of optimism for the character as well. Though, after Batman v Superman premiered, there were rumors that Ben Affleck would not return to the role. While we did see him again in Suicide Squad and Justice League, these rumors are continuing. Worlds of DC (formerly the DCEU) has not been as successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps Affleck does not want to be part of a failing franchise.

Will He Or Won’t He?

Matt Reeves, writer and director of The Batman, did not specifically say if Affleck was to return or not. He did not rule out the chance of a new actor under the cowl, either. At the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, Reeves mentioned he was still in talks with Affleck about the movie.

“There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well,” Reeves said. “We’re one piece of many pieces so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.”

While not giving anything away, Reeves seems to be saying that his movie could work with Affleck or anyone else under the cowl. If someone else were to wear the cowl, the movie could be a flashback.

“From the beginning, what I had always spoken about with Warner Brothers and what I was excited about was being in the Bat-universe and really doing something within that sphere,” Reeves said. “That was always what it was going to be … it hasn’t changed a lot since I first met with them. It’s very much the same thrust if that makes sense. A lot of things have happened since then but the movie, and why I’m excited about it, is it continues to be the same inspirations and excitement of what we talked about in the beginning.”

Is Ben Affleck Needed?

Ben Affleck is a great actor but his role as Batman has only gone downhill since his debut. After every movie he is in, there is always a rumor about whether he will continue or not. While Marvel actors are going through those same rumors, those actors have been working for at least 10 years. Affleck has only been in three movies since he signed on to be Batman.

If Affleck doesn’t want to be Batman anymore, Warner Brothers shouldn’t force him. There are plenty of actors who would love the chance to play the Caped Crusader and not moan about it after every movie. Sure, there are sacrifices for becoming a superhero, but there are actors who would make that sacrifice.

Audiences don’t need the biggest name in Hollywood to play the Dark Knight. All audiences really need is a good actor that could make them love the character. Whether that means doing as many stunts and fights as you can or just making audiences care is up to the actor.
