According to Variety, there is a rumor that Ben Mendelsohn is being considered for the villain role in Marvel’s upcoming film Captain Marvel. Marvel Studios has not yet confirmed this rumor, so a rumor is what it remains.
More about Ben Mendelsohn
If Mendelsohn were to be cast as the villain in Captain Marvel, he would likely be cast as the Skrull leader. At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige announced that Captain Marvel would take place in the 1990s, and hinted that the alien species Skrulls would somehow enter the plot. Geneva Robertson-Dworet wrote the most recent script for the upcoming blockbuster film.
Mendelsohn has played a number of villains on the small and big screens. He won an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for playing the villainous (albeit not murderous) Danny Rayburn in the second season of the Netflix series Bloodline. In the movies, his recent villainous roles include Roland Daggett the man responsible for unleashing Bane on Gotham City in The Dark Knight Rises, Orson Krennic from last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the Sheriff of Nottingham from next year’s Robin Hood: Origins.
Captain Marvel will star Brie Larson (Room, The Glass Castle) as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. It is also rumored that fan-favorite character Nick Fury will return, once again played by Samuel L. Jackson. Captain Marvel is set to be the first female-led Marvel Studios film, and will likely be arriving in theaters on March 8, 2018.
