Benioff and Weiss Leave Westeros for a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Game of Thrones is a bona fide pop culture phenomenon. When it comes to television, the fantasy series reigns supreme. Over the last eight years, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss cultivated a rabid fan base by bringing the land of Westeros to the small screen and striking the perfect balance between remaining true to the source material and forging their own bloody path in the fight for the iron throne. However, Game of Thrones is coming to an end after it’s next season. And, that means Benioff and Weiss are free agents. Naturally, Disney and Lucasfilm saw their opportunity and snatched the duo up to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.
The new films are separate from the episodic Star Wars films and the recently announced Rian Johnson trilogy. Currently, there is no word on if the Star Wars Story films will continue after the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Either way, the announcement of Benioff and Weiss’s talents heading to the “House of Mouse” is huge. Granted, some fans aren’t too pleased with the announcement.
Reactions from Star Wars Fans to the Announcement
Last year, HBO announced Benioff and Weiss were developing a series entitled Confederate. The premise of the show focused on a post-Civil War America wherein the war ended in a stalemate. Many saw the move as tone deaf given the fervor surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement. Not to mention, the writing duo is white. The show has yet to be canceled, but this new announcement could leave it on the idea floor.
Little details exist about the duo’s Star Wars films, other than a joint statement where the pair claim production is to begin “as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.” Seeing Benioff and Weiss break off from their traditional medium and head into the realm of feature films is going to be interesting.
