Being a sci-fi fan can make you want to be in the middle of where things went down. I am not referring only to movies but shows and books as well. As you may very well know, many locations where important scenes were filmed are open to the public, and if you really want to stand in the same place your heroes did, you now have that option. Below, you will find some of the most popular sci-fi locations that you have to check out.
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, Agua Dulce, California – Star Trek
Of course, we are going to start off with Star Trek. It is, after all, one of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made. The Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park provides the perfect landscapes for alien planets. Most may know it from the classic TOS episode Arena. However, you should know that the location was used multiple times throughout the series. Many different scenes were filmed there. Even some scenes in the 2009 Star Trek reboot were shot in the exact same location. It is perfectly understandable. The rock patterns, which are unique, provide excellent scenery. You can check it out yourself if you want. Some fans even reproduce the famous picture of Spock’s parents, which can be quite romantic if you think about it.
MetCentre, Sydney, Australia – The Matrix
We cannot talk about sci-fi and not mention The Matrix, now can we? The MetCentre in Sydney was built in 1980, and in the movie, it is the location where Neo works. The place looks horrible, like people who would work there would die little by little every day, but in reality, the site is quite charming. It is a huge shopping center. While you will not find Keanu Reeves there, you may be able to buy something nice for yourself. And just because the building is real, it does not mean that the Matrix is too. Just saying.
Finse, Norway – Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars is another sci-fi classic and leaving the battle between Star Wars and Star Trek aside, I think we can all agree that they are both great franchises. Now, most people tend to visit Tunisia because that is where Tatooine is located. It is a wonderful choice. You get to visit a foreign country and all that. However, if you feel up for it, you can visit the planet Hoth in Finnse, Norway. Sure, the climate is not as gentle, and if you are not careful enough, you may lose a finger to frostbite. However, how could stand where Luke Skywalker almost died in a blizzard. Pretty intense, right?
Kauai, Hawaii – Jurassic Park
I do not know if you know this, but most scenes in both the original Jurassic Park and its sequels were filmed in Hawaii. As you can imagine, many locations were used, but most scenes were shot on the small island of Kauai. However, you should know that many areas are restricted for the sake of preservation of the island’s natural resources. Even so, you can still hike and see the poles of the main gate. Sure, you have to walk for about 8 miles, and the gate itself is no longer there, but I think the effort is worth it.
So there you have it. As you can imagine, there are many more such locations where you can go and enjoy your favorite sci-fi movie scenes. In your head, of course, but at least you get to be in the same place as your favorite characters. Just do not forget that some countries may require a visa to get there. But others only require a passport. And we all know that getting a passport is effortless these days.
