The Novel That Inspired the Netflix Hit Adaptation is Getting a Sequel
Last year Bird Box hit the small screen on Netflix, and for a while there it seemed like that was all the internet could talk about. Well, now we officially know that Bird Box—the novel, that is—is getting a sequel.
Bird Box was written by Josh Malerman. The novel was originally published back in 2014, and it did create some waves throughout book communities. It really hit the media when Netflix picked it up and turned it into one of their original films. In the world of Bird Box, a mysterious entity has suddenly appeared. Anybody who sees it feels compelled to, well, kill themselves. Both the novel and the movie follow Malorie as she tries to survive and find a good location to survive in.
Bird Box became so insanely popular that Netflix had to put out a message asking people NOT to participate in the Bird Box challenge. The Bird Box challenge is essentially where you throw on a blindfold and go about your day. Needless to say, it didn’t end well for a lot of people (side note: please don’t try this!).
The Netflix movie also inspired countless memes and jokes that spread around online. So it’s really no surprise that Josh Malerman was inspired to write a sequel.
Believe it or not, the sequel is actually due out this year! It’s been titled Malorie, and Josh Malerman has promised that the new novel will finally tell us more about those mysterious entities. As you can probably guess from the title, our main character has even stayed the same.
The novel is set eight years after the original—so Malorie and her children have had plenty of time to grow and adapt to their new environment. But what will they be learning about the entities, I wonder?
Malorie is due to release on October 1st.
