Black Mask is Big Bad for Birds of Prey

The Black Mask Returns…

Unless you have been hiding in your own clock tower, you have probably heard about the new Birds of Prey film. Birds of Prey is a film based on the series of comics of the same name starring some of DC Comics’ most famous super-heroines teaming up against some of DC’s worst. The all-female team was a semi-extension of the Bat-family (under Batman’s employment). It was famously led by post-Killing Joke Barbara Gordon (aka the Oracle) and Black Canary. The team specialized in covert operations and special missions. The team roster shuffled members round over the years. It has already been revealed that Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya, Cassandra Cain, and Harley Quinn will appear in the film. However, until this week, we have not known who the main antagonist will be. It appears now that Birds of Prey’s main bad will be Black Mask.

Black Mask is a brutal mob boss. He runs a crime syndicate called The False Face Society. He is a rogue from Batman’s gallery that has been actively antagonizing him since his 1985 debut. Black Mask, aka Roman Sionis, was from a wealthy family. He murdered his parents to gain control of their property. After failing to maintain the family business, he blamed Bruce Wayne and several others for his fall from grace. Since then, he has sought revenge in numerous violent ways.  He hides his face behind a skull-like black mask and usually dons a business suit to go with it.  Black Mask has made several notable appearances in Batman’s history, one being harassed by Jason Todd during the events of Batman: Under The Red Hood.

Putting In Some Bird Calls

The staff for this film is still building up as well. The film will be directed by Cathy Yan. Yan will be the first Asian woman to direct for DC. The film will be written by Christina Hodson. Hodson is also working on Batgirl. Finally, it will be produced by Margot Robbie, Sue Kroll, and Bryan Unkeless. If these names stand out for you, they should. Sue Kroll previously worked for Warner Bros. as president of worldwide distribution and marketing. Bryan produced for most of the Hunger Games films trilogy as well as I, Tonya.  Margot Robbie played Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad film and will also be playing Harley in this adaption of Birds of Prey. All in all, it’ll be interesting to see how this film develops.
