Blade Runner 2049 Trailer Shows Notable Cameo

Blade Runner 2049 is coming to a theater near you this week! But there’s still another trailer which you may not have seen. You can check it out below. Those of you worried about spoilers may want to skip it (and the rest of this article), because there’s a cameo reveal that may reveal too many details.

The Blade Runner 2049  Reveal

After this point in the article, there will be discussion of possible Blade Runner 2049 spoilers. Continue at your own risk!

In this final trailer, Ryan Gosling’s character, Officer K, meets with someone whose face we don’t see at first. When discussing Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), this unknown character says, “He liked to work alone,” and places an origami creature on the table (it’s not clear what the creature is). The camera then pans up to the speaker’s face: it’s Officer Gaff (Edward James Olmos, also known for playing Bill Adama on the remake of Battlestar Galactica).

The origami creature recalls a theme from the original Blade Runner film. Gaff liked to make origami animals and leave them around for Deckard. At the very end of the film, he leaves a unicorn (which this animal does not look like) for Deckard to find. The meaning of the unicorn has been a hotly debated topic ever since.

Many fans consider the unicorn to be Gaff revealing to Deckard that he knows that Deckard is a replicant. The evidence for this seems to be based on a daydream that Deckard has in some of the cuts of Blade Runner, where a wild unicorn appears. These fans believe that Gaff must have known about Deckard’s dream, which means that dream must be an implanted memory, which means that Deckard himself must be a replicant.

Whether or not Deckard is actually a replicant, Gaff seems to have an interesting insight into what Deckard thinks. He’ll likely be an interesting person for Officer K to glean information from.

Blade Runner 2049 will be coming to a theater near you this Friday, October 6th. As of this writing, this sequel film has a rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes
