Brec Bassinger Lands Title Role in New DC Universe Series
Remember the days of Brec Bassinger in Bella and the Bulldogs? Quite a character, with her optimism and confidence that shone through the series. Now, the former Nickelodeon star is back as Courtney Whitmore in the upcoming Stargirl TV show.
The man behind Stargirl’s creation is none other than DC’s former CCO Geoff Johns. The character is a tribute to his late sister, Courtney Johns, her virtues shining through in the form of Courtney Whitmore. In addition to that, Stargirl carries her name too. In an article by TVLine, Johns gave a few words of fondness over Bassinger
“There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl. After searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger. Brec’s warmth, strength, humor, and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.”
The 13-episode series is expected to arrive next year in the coming DC’s streaming service. The series is about Courtney Whitmore (Stargirl), a high school sophomore who becomes a part of an unlikely group of heroes to battle the villains of the past. That group is The Justice Society of America.
Her backstory is one that the youth can relate on. Courtney Whitmore is a teenager who lives “a perfect life”. She’s intelligent and a notch higher than most. That is until her mother remarries. She’s having struggles in adapting to her stepfamily, her new school and the town they moved into. Then, she finds a secret about her stepfather, the good kind, of course. Pat Dugan turns out to be a former sidekick to a superhero.
Courtney borrows the lost hero’s cosmic staff and with that, becomes the inspiration to a new generation of heroes.
Stargirl has been seen in live-action versions such as Britt Irvin in Smallville and Sarah Grey in Legends of Tomorrow. Only hoping for the best for Stargirl and Brec Bassinger.
