Brian Michael Bendis Signs Deal with DC Comics

Bendis Jumps Ship to DC Comics

On Tuesday morning, a major announcement sent shockwaves throughout the comic book industry. After seventeen years at Marvel Comics, Brian Michael Bendis has signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics. DC announced the deal on their Twitter account:

Bendis followed up on his own Twitter, saying “This is real. I love you all. Change is good. Change is healthy. I am bursting with ideas and inspirations. Details to come! Stay tuned!”

Reactions from comic industry veterans came quickly:

One major reaction came from Marvel Chief Creative Officer, Joe Quesada:

As of this writing, DC has not announced what title or titles Bendis will be working on. Some rumored titles include a Zatanna run (due to statements made a few years ago), replacing Christopher Priest down the line on Justice League, or even being the man to bring back fan favorite concepts such as Justice Society or The Legion of Superheroes. Given Bendis’ clout, he would certainly have his pick of titles at DC Comics.

Bendis’ Marvel-ous Career

Not since Jack Kirby has a creator move from Marvel to DC has sent fans into a tizzy. Bendis got started at Marvel in 2000 with Ultimate Spider-Man, and ultimately helped craft the direction of Marvel’s Ultimate line. During his tenure on Ultimate Spider-Man, he created the now fan-favorite, Miles Morales. In the main Marvel universe, he created superpowered detective, Jessica Jones, helmed the “Avengers Disassembled” storyline, and did a well-received run on Daredevil. Several events he’s been part of include Siege, House of M, Secret Invasion, and most recently wrote Civil War II. His most recent addition to Marvel’s grand cast is Riri Williams, aka. Ironheart.

This is a major coup for DC Comics, and quite possibly a blow to Marvel. Marvel’s writers are not as well-known as their DC counterparts. With Bendis’ departure, Marvel has lost one of their biggest stars in their bullpen. Bendis has not yet given a reason for his move. It’s possible that, like former Marvel star and current DC artist, John Romita Jr., the temptation of working with these legendary characters was too tempting to pass up.
