Author Bridget Lawless is Starting a New Prize for Thrillers That’ll Change the Game
Tired of constantly seeing thrillers that show (and romanticize) violence against women, Bridget Lawless has decided to take things into her own hands. To resolve this, she will be running a new award and prize that’ll reward authors for avoiding these subjects.
A Call to Action
Bridget Lawless has been increasingly vocal about her frustration with all of the violence against women in media and in real life. She’s spoken out against award ceremonies that celebrate real and fictional people who commit these acts. For example, she’s openly stated that she will not be voting in the BAFTA awards this year for a variety of reasons, but mostly due to the nominees involved.
So it’s really no surprise that she’s taking her frustration a step further, and hopefully turn it into something productive.

The Staunch Book Prize
The website for the Staunch Book Prize has this to say: “The 2019 Staunch Book Prize will be awarded to a novel in the thriller genre in which no woman is beaten, stalked, sexually exploited, raped or murdered.”
The site goes on to clarify that they’re not looking for the reserve to happen. As in, they don’t want to see men beaten and abused in place of women. Instead, this award is to encourage thriller novelists to think of new and unique ways to captivate their audiences. And to be honest, that sounds like a brilliant idea all around. Violence against women is emotionally exhausting for many readers, and has been done countless times already.
You might be asking yourself why this award is specifically targeting thriller novels, instead of novels on the whole. But we’ve all got to start somewhere, right? But beyond that, The Staunch Book Prize actually did cite a reason for starting with thrillers:
“We focus on thrillers because they’re a huge and important genre in their own right – and frequently also source material for film and television. We want to show not only readers, but producers, directors, and actors that there are amazing, complex stories perfect for screen adaptation being written today by authors with fresh ideas, great imagination, brilliant plotting skills and truly original stories to tell.”
The first round of entries will be running from February 22nd to July 15th. So make sure to get any submissions in during that period! The prize itself will be £2,000/$2836 cash. So not an insignificant amount.
