This year at San Diego Comic Con, or SDCC, was chock-full of the usual trailers, reveals, and fun times with celebs such as John Barrowman participating in the cosplay festivities. This was also the weekend of casting reveals. The much anticipated Captain Marvel film has been pondering many actresses for the title role, the front runner being Oscar-winner Brie Larson. According to Variety, as of this weekend, Brie is our Captain Marvel. MCU phase 3 is growing before our eyes! The character is also rumored to make her first appearance in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 before the release of her solo film, much like they did for Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, whose well-anticipated solo film was also discussed at SDCC. The character of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is an air-force fighter pilot who, when infected by alien matter, gains the ability to fly, superhuman strength, and energy projection.
The Lady Behind Captain Marvel
Given her award background alone, Brie is a solid choice for the role. She comes from an eclectic television background and is seeing rapid growth in the film industry over the next couple years. Many may remember her from United States of Tara, where she plays Kate, the angst – filled yet mature older child of Tara Gregson (Toni Collett), a woman living with an advanced case of Multiple Personality Disorder. Kate’s character was fairly complex, being a teen facing adulthood a little faster by having to shift gears to accommodate the chaos in her family. She has also appeared in shows like Community and movies like 21 Jump Street, putting her stamp on Hollywood this past winter with Room.
Captain Marvel is being scripted by Meg LeFauve(Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman, and Kevin Feige is set to produce it. A director has not been selected at this time. As with most of the Marvel movies to date, we should expect other avengers to make cameo appearances in the film.
Captain Marvel is set for release March 8th, 2019.
