Two pieces of casting news were recently announced which are likely to be of particular interest to Word of the Nerd readers. Apparently Jada Pinkett Smith has been added to the cast of the new Fox drama Gotham and Karen Gillan has been attached to Selfie, a pilot from Suburgatory creator/executive producer Emily Kapnek.
Gotham casting has been in the news quite a bit lately. Starting with the announcement that Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C., and Batman: Year One) was given the “lead” role of Detective Jim Gordon. Shortly thereafter Fox made it known that Robin Lord Taylor (Accepted, Another Earth) would be playing Oswald Cobblepot, Erin Richards (Being Human, Breaking In) would play Barbara Kean, Jim Gordon’s fiancée, Sean Pertwee (Camelot, Dog Soldiers) would be Alfred Pennyworth and Captain Sarah Essen, Gordon’s boss, will be played by Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice, Guilt Trip). Now Jada Pinkett Smith has been brought on to play Gotham’s Fish Mooney. The character is described as “a sadistic gangster with street smarts and a short temper.” Mooney appears to be a new player in Gotham City, never before seen in the DC universe.
Jada Pinkett Smith is the wife of Will Smith and mother of Willow and Jaden Smith. She is best known for her roles in the Matrix sequels, as the voice of Gloria the Hippo in the Madagascar films, and HawthoRNe.
Karen Gillan is best known for her portrayal of Doctor Who companion Amy Pond. This summer she’ll be seen as Nebula in the Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy film. After traveling all over the universe and often all throughout all of time, it looks like she’ll be sticking closer to Earth for her next role. Ms. Gillan will star in Selfie a pilot from creator/ executive producer Emily Kapnek (Suburgatory). In a role inspired by My Fair Lady, Gillan will play Eliza Dooley, a self-obsessed 20-something who enlists the help of a marketing expert after an embarrassing video goes viral.
