Catwoman Returns to the Movies
Catwoman, that femme fatale, always seems to be popular. The famed cat burglar, and former Bat-fiancee, is on an upswing, of late. Her solo series is doing well, and there is that Bat/Cat book coming next year. Now, Selina Kyle might be coming back to the silver screen. This week, it’s rumored that Vanessa Kirby will be cast as Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, opposite Robert Pattinson. Kirby would be joining the ranks of silver screen incarnations of the character. Past actresses have included Lee Meriweather, Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway. Other Catwoman alumni include Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, and Camren Bicondova.
Kirby played Princess Margaret on The Crown, and is about to appear in Hobbes & Shaw. She is apparently on the short list for the role, but has not secured it yet. However, after rave reviews for The Crown and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, she is a top candidate for the part. Like the casting of Batman, the process could take months. With filming gearing up in the next few months, we are certain to hear an announcement soon.
Catwoman and Company?
However, Miss Kyle might not be the only villain who will appear to bedevil the Batman. It is rumored that roughly six major villains will play important roles in Matt Reeves’ film. The rumored villains are Catwoman, Penguin, Two-Face, Mad Hatter, Firefly, and Riddler. While this might seem like too many villains, most of these might be around in cameos, or to enrich the retcon world-building being done by Reeve. Andy Serkis is currently rumored to be tapped to play Penguin, despite lobbying from Josh Gad.
We will likely hear announcements about casting news for the other characters, including possible returning actors, before filming begins. In the meantime, Kirby might have a rival for her role: Aubrey Plaza.
