Christopher Eccleston Briefly Reprised His Role as the Ninth Doctor for Two Special Fans
Fans of Doctor Who – both the original series and the new series – know that Christopher Eccleston brought everyone’s favorite Time Lord back to the small screen in 2005. Starring opposite Billie Piper who played his companion, Rose, Eccleston became the ninth incarnation of The Doctor. He did – as Nine would say – fantastic, even if it was for only one season.
A Special Surprise
Two fans of the show were just married, and Eccleston took on the role just once more. He shot a special video as Nine congratulating the fans on their special day, and joked about being sour that he was not formally invited.
“That’s just typical,” he said. “You fall in love, you get married, you’re really happy, and me, The Doctor, who’s saved the universe God knows how many times, doesn’t get an invite. Doesn’t. Get. An invite. Typical of you apes, isn’t it?”
Before he wrapped up, he came around with a soft word of encouragement. “My two hearts are beating as one for you today,” he said. “Congratulations on your wedding day, and I won’t be there in the blue box, but I will be there in spirit.”
A Difficult Journey
This reprise of the role is a big statement for Eccleston. He did not leave the show on good terms. Since the show aired, the actor has made it clear in interviews that things were not going his way in production, and he felt his only choice was to leave after one season. He did not return for the fiftieth anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor.” This led to the creation of John Hurt’s Doctor to represent the post-war Doctor.
Eccleston does not have a lot of nice things to say about his experience and why he left. “I’d had enough,” he said. “I wanted to do it my way, they wanted something else.” He even used the word “disaster” to describe it.
With all that in the mix, it is incredibly special that these fans got such a lovely message from him. Congratulations to the happy couple! May your marriage be…fantastic!
