Comic Book Villains Who Are Into Gambling

Supervillains Connected With Gambling

Every comic book hero has their villain. The best villains are those who bring something exciting to the story. Some villains, like Joker, Two-Face and Chance have something in common. Besides being classic comic book villains, they all like gambling.

We looked through all the different ages and parallel universes in comics to find out villains from both DC and Marvel that share a connection to gambling. The villains embody the changing nature as opposed to the reliability of superheroes. They emerged from the stereotypes of casinos ever since the first comic book came into circulation. Let’s meet the thrilling comic book villains who like to gamble.

The Joker

Comic Book Villains Who Are Into GamblingThe Joker is a very popular Batman adversary, in fact, he is the first supervillain that Batman encountered in the first issue of Batman.

Even though Joker isn’t into gambling, his very name is an inspiration from a playing card.

The Joker doesn’t have any superhuman abilities, like Batman, but he is experienced in chemical engineering. He also owns thematic joker/clown weapons, such as razor-tipped poker cards, joy buzzers, spraying lapel flowers and a Jack-in-the-box with dangerous surprises.

Super-villains need to have henchmen or a sidekick. A romantic interest was introduced to Joker in 1992, Harley Quinn. She mimicked The Joker’s appearance as well, dressing in a jester costume. She also changes her original name from Harleen Quinzel to Harley Quinn, inspired by the Harlequin.

Two-Face

Comic Book Villains Who Are Into GamblingI remember Two-Face from the Batman animated series back in the 90’s Two-Face is also a member of Batman’s rogue gallery. His first appearance was in Detective Comics #66 published in 1942. Two-Face has an alter ego of District Attorney of Gotham, Harvey Dent. Dent was scarred by acid on the left side of his face. After the incident, Harvey adopted the Two-Face alias.

Two-Face is obsessed with the conflict between good and evil and the nature of duality. Because of this, all his important decisions are based on the flipping of his two-headed coin. One side of the coin scarred, the other pristine. He believes that chance is the only true justice, making him an unpredictable foe. Before his accident, Harvey was an ally of Batman and James Gordon.

The Penguin

Comic Book Villains Who Are Into GamblingPenguin wasn’t really a favorite character of mine, but since watching Gotham, I started to like and understand this character and his motivations.

The Penguin aka Oswald Cobblepot’s first appearance was in Detective Comics #58 in 1941. Penguin rules the Gotham underworld from his casino and nightclub, called The Iceberg Casino. His casino provides a safe place for his criminal colleagues to gamble, drink and plan their next criminal schemes.

The Penguin has repeatedly been named one of the best Batman villains and one of the greatest villains in the DC Universe.

Chance

Comic Book Villains Who Are Into GamblingNow we are going to see what Marvel Comics offers in terms of villains and gambling. Chance, an enemy of Spider-Man, his first appearance in Web of Spider-Man #15.

Nicholas Powell, his alter ego, is a former professional gambler who wanted more thrills out of life. He chooses to become a mercenary for hire, incorporating his gambling skills into his missions. He adopted the Chance alias because he liked to leave everything to chance.

Chance’s first run-in with Spider-Man was in a double or nothing bet to kill his intended target and the Web-Slinger.

While many iconic heroes and villains have received a revival in recent years, from comics to movies and television, they are also equally popular on the reels as well. Online casinos, similar to Gametwist online casino, focuses on prominent characters from Marvel and DC. Some online casinos have slots that are inspired from the popular comic characters, like Apollo God of the Sun inspired by the character appearing in Wonder Woman. While other online casinos develop specific comic book related slots, such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and the Dark Knight Trilogy.
