Convergence has actually been a really big surprise. At first it seemed like it was just going to be another one of those ugh why another summer event comic series, kind of like the main Secret Wars has been (no offense, Marvel). But Convergence although probably not a huge game changer a few years from now has actually been an event I’ve been eagerly picking up the issues for and this trend very much continues with the new issue.
In this issue King and Lobdell finally draw the players of the new 52 into the drama, with them all wondering what the bloody heck is happening to their already messed up lives now. After their confusion the pace moves quickly showing the battle between Deimos and the reformed Telos, whilst the many other universe characters duke it out. Until they discover that Deimos just wants them all dead, then they all decide it might be better to focus on the big bad.
The art and colouring of the series remains consistent and more importantly it remains consistently good, which is always necessary when it comes to big events. The art particularly excels in those moments where Lopresti, Morales and Steigerwald get to show their skills. In particular the moment where the characters of the new 52 see the many other versions of themselves. This is both a delight visually with the colours almost popping of the page and is a great homage to the rich history of DC and the many other worlds it has explored over the years.
The real highlight of this comic is that (spoiler alert) the villain is defeated a whole issue early. This was a refreshing surprise although it does lead into the possible destruction of the multiverse (wait to go Hal). The possible destruction of the multiverse should (hopefully) lead into what DC has in store for us with the more diverse line post Convergence. This makes me eagerly want to see how the conclusion of the event is going to play out and very excited for the comics that will come after it, which is hopefully a feeling shared by many DC fans.
