Justice League #42 continues the slow burn event that is the Darkseid War. In this issue we have Superman and Lex Luthor on Apokolips, whilst the rest of the league remains on Earth attempting to deal with Darkseids daughter and the other problems that continue to unfold around them.
Johns writing is a testament to the idea that you don’t have to be fast paced in order to tell a good story. This issue focuses heavily on moving the plot along to the point of bringing the actual war to earth, so the action for this issue is fairly low. We do however find out who Grails mother is and the league manages to escape the fighting with a little help from Metron that is. He also delivers some big whammy moments in this issue, which if you haven’t read I won’t spoil but the end of the issue is a huge doozy.
Faboks art follows the traditional house style that most of DCs larger books are known for. It is a little samey to say the least, but that isn’t always a negative as Faboks rendering of the villains in particular are fantastic. His version of Darkseid is vicious looking enough to inspire some level of fear, which is exactly how someone who has the power to kill through his eyes and rules an evil planet should look. His art is complimented quite well by Andersons use of colour. Anderson uses bright colours for the most part in the issue which in the few fight scenes of the issue really pop off the page and increase the idea of danger.
The Darkseid War seems to finally be hitting its stride in this issue with a huge game changer taking place at the end of the issue. If you’re a Batman fan, or are just plain interested in the events of the Darkseid War this is an issue that you really shouldn’t miss from your pull list.
