Coming Soon: Solo Superman and Batman Movies?

In spite of the poor critical reaction to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is fighting on. And if Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder has any say, that fight would include another solo Superman movie.

Currently, Superman is only scheduled to appear in the two Justice League movies coming in 2017 and 2019, but Snyder told IGN, “I think if we could get a good script it’d be great to have a standalone Superman movie. I think that would be fun to do.”

The Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill, is also interested in the project. He told IGN, “It’s something I’d be very keen to do.” But he did point out that nothing is in the works yet and that any plans would depend on the success of Batman v Superman and working around the other DCEU movies already planned.

With two movies due to be released every year through 2020, the DCEU is full to the brim with movie plans at the moment, but as Cinemablend reports, there are rumors to support the idea that a solo Batman movie with Ben Affleck is being added to the scheduled in 2018.

Although Affleck is busy filming Live by Night, he told Entertainment Weekly that a Batman movie is in development. Affleck even wrote a script for the movie that has been described as “a really cool [Batman] idea.”

Geoff Johns, chief creative officer at DC Entertainment, indicated a solo Batman movie would take place before Batman v Superman. He talked to Entertainment Weekly about the graffitied Robin uniform in the Batman v Superman trailer. “We’ll be exploring that,” Johns said. “No one says specifically the name of which Robin that is.”

Given the excitement surrounding a new Batman movie, could a Superman movie be coming sooner than we think?

Producer Charles Roven told IGN, “We’re in the process of looking at that, but we don’t have it on the schedule at the moment because we’re quite busy with the movies that we have scheduled.”

Roven’s comment may not be the most promising, but if the DCEU wants to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it stands to reason that DC would have to look into making more movies. The MCU currently has three movies planned every year until 2020.

If the DCEU is expanding even further, which superhero would you like to see in a solo movie: Batman or Superman? Or do you hope that both movies will soon be on the horizon?
